No one ever said he wasn't allowed to rip Carlson.

    Oy. Fucking. Vay.

I said he shouldn't have been a major-league asshat about it.

Or is it possible that many of the fanboys ripping Carlson will always side with a coach ripping the media for any reason?

  3. Yank away, but I'd prefer you do it on the other boards. It would just be nice for a journalism board to have a semi-serious discussion on journalism issues without having to navigate through all the dickweeds - of course now Wicked may attack me for calling for some civility on the journalism board.

    Damned if I do, damned if I don't. :p

Jesus, we're chasing our tails again.

    Yes, it wasn'ta great column.

His little performance at the press conference was childish, immature and unprofessional and he should have been reprimanded by the university.

If he had any balls--which apparently he doesn't--he would have pulled Carlson aside for a little on on one.

As they say in hockey, a gutless little puke.

"Message-board posters? Our readership? Eighty-five percent of the fuckin' world is working. The other fifteen percent post on message boards. A fuckin' playground for the cocksuckers."

Seriously, let's not be too hasty to equate the message-board crowd with newspaper readers as a whole.

If you really want some insight into why the "public" is so solidly behind Gundy, check out Stewart Mandel's latest mail bag on cnnsi.com. I think he hits the nail squarely on the head.

    And no, I'm not Stewart.

By the way, if the "public" is defined by the idiots who routinely rip coaches, players, etc., on fan sites and radio call-in shows, I'm more than happy to stand by the people on this board (and in our profession) who see this guy for the grandstanding buffoon he's proven himself to be.

  9. That's an easy answer pard. The public hates the media. Why do you think they don't trust newspapers, TV or radio any more? Why do you think certain Web sites are becoming more reliable and trustworthy sources in the public's view?

The public believes the media is, in general, misinformed and biased and reports pretty much only what it wants to. I can't say that they don't have a case either. FOX News coverage should say enough to convince you on that.

Put away your strawman. It is not as easy as being "behind" one or the other. Gundy had every right to defend his player about a column he felt unfair. The method by which he expressed it? Very questionable. And his assertion that Big XII college athletes are amateurs -- and they should be treated as such -- is off base. Schools make millions on those kids, and hide behind their amateur status when it benefits them.

Carlson jumped to some conclusions about a player's heart based on what could be construed as so-so evidence. The media at times loses track of players being real people that have feelings and could definitely be more sympathetic.

So this is not a for-him/for-her issue. Much more gray area than that. That is if you accept the notion that the public is behind Gundy so dramatically -- or that journalists are behind Carlson so strongly. I'd like to see the real split.
