I agree. Just trying to stem the revisionism.

I hear his mom actually ate the chicken and then regurgitated into his mouth so he wouldn't have to dull his incisors. But that's something tiled up on the sly, and I'm not talking about the Italian Stallion.

That's just one example of a million different ways that the whole incident could have taken place. And we're left to wonder because Carlson, despite using the anecdote as a key literary device, provides so few details that it's not even clear she actually witnessed it. Those that don't think it happened surely are wrong. I can't imagine someone creating such a strange story out of thin air.

This thread reminds me that I had somebody use the "parent" angle on me early in my career after I noted in a story that a wrestler flipped off the crowd at the conclusion of a heated state championship match, thus resulting in a penalty that cost his team the title (they lost by one-half point). I was amazed to see a letter to the editor come in that basically said I'd have kids one day and when I did, "what goes around comes around." Lovely.

Honestly, I can understand that kind of response from yahoo parents worried about little Johnny's bruised ego. From a Div. I coach (even one us spectacularly mediocre as Gundy), I'd expect better.

Not absurd. If a writer could paint a picture of a spoiled little Johnny mama's boy, it's that the boy, 21, is being fed chicken by his mom. *That's* absurd.

There was something on sportscenter about it today. how he said that he and jenni's relationship will continue and theyve had many talks through the years (months, whatever), and while he really didn't say, "im sorry" he certainly buried the hatchet. at least i thought so. then sportscenter went to the good morning america interview with jenni and she was all 'im standing by my story, my sources, my information and my observations.'

again, the only problem i have is the chicken feeding thing. just not cool. at some point or another, some people' weaknesses are exposed, and if its not on the field, i kind of feel its out of bounds to write about.

You think he brings that heat if Berry Tramel writes that column? I'm guessing he'd have shown more respect than that, but maybe I'm way off.

  7. I'm really not Jenni. Honest.
But I know a lot more about this than most, being in this state and knowing most of the media members.
I'll reiterate again that her facts were correct, at least according to what I hear.
Jenni was told the chicken thing by a beat writer who saw it. The story the fans are telling now is that Reid was carrying his bag in one hand and had his cell phone in the other. He was in a hurry to get to the bus and his mom went, "Here, eat this quick." She did literally feed him.
Gundy did nothing approaching apologizing. He said he didn't dislike Jenni and he isn't "against the media." That's as far as he went.
Please don't use the argument, "No column, no outburst, so it's his fault." An over-reaction HAS to be a reaction to something, obviously, so it doesn't absolve him of responsibility.

  8. I don't think he'd bring as much heat for Berry because it's clear he has tremendous respect for Berry -- as do most of the people in this state.
Now, whether he'd bring it to another male in-state columnist -- like John Rhode or Dave Sittler -- that's worth debating.

The type of chicken detail is crucial. Wings? That's unfair to the player if he's carrying a bag and only has one hand free, unless they're all drumsticks, that's pretty manageable with one hand. But actually any chicken with a bone could be potentially harmful as a choking hazard. Chicken fingers is the only option.

Now if Reid was eating chicken fingers and Mom was holding the honey mustard dipping sauce, well, that's just embarrassing and deserving of criticism. Man's gotta hold his own sauce.

ADOkie touched on this, but here is what Gundy said:

    http://newsok.com/article/3133454/1190696643

This quote makes it sound like he possibly "buried the hatchet", but he didn't sound that way at the start of the presser or in the Big 12 teleconference when he said:

(also from same linked OKan article published Tuesday.

And ESPN is doing nothing to help this story end. Everything they showed today of Gundy was from his press conference on Monday, they just chose to use a different part of it so they could have a new package.

Playthrough, I was unaware of this sauce rule. Shit, I guess I'm not a man, though I usually don't eat dippable things on the run. I'm 22, so I'm not a man yet, at least not in Gundy's or some other other posters' eyes. I can take criticism and eat my own chicken, but still working on the sauce.

  11. I was there Monday. I heard his quotes and his tone. I don't believe he was apologizing at all.
Come on. Given the chance to report what was incorrect, he said, "I don't have to."
That's not a man who is apologizing.

  12. He added at that press conference that he "should have said more," BTW.
