Tramel wouldn't have written a column that shitty. He's too good a reporter to do that. So I don't think Gundy would have went off the deep end.

  3. This explanation is horseshit -- or, probably more accurately, chickenshit.

As has been pointed out about 100 times already, the fact that the mom fed the kid some chicken after a ballgame while he was apparently talking on a cell phone doesn't mean the kid is a wimp. You've got to do better than that. That she didn't see this episode, and/or didn't find out more about it, is terrible reporting.

Gundy sounds like the kind of hothead coach who still might have popped off had Carlson written a perfectly constructed, iron-clad column. But here's the thing: she didn't. She gave the readers nothing but a bunch of hearsay. I'd like to think that even people in Oklahoma are smart enough to understand, even appreciate, solid reporting. This wasn't.

  4. Did you read his post-rant column? Now that was something I WOULD be embarrassed to put in the paper.

I like this part of the story

Just because she wasn't there doesn't mean she can't have good sources. I think saying she has good sources indicates that she wasn't there and was given the info from someone else.

And if the source is wrong?

Look, her source for the chicken thing was obviously the beat guy. If the beat guy is making things up, the Oklahoman has bigger problems than Jenni Carlson.

My problems with the chicken incident are

1, It wasn't fully explained (was he holding bags and talking on the phone, was he in a hurry to get on the bus, how long did this last -- a whole bucketful of KFC?

2, A huge conclusion or meaning was drawn from it -- that the kid is a momma's boy. He might be those things but that incident doesn't convince me.

3, Lots of college football players are momma's boys. So what, there's no connection to football.

The chicken thing was weak. And I think the whole piece was garbage. Too much trying to delve into the psyche of a kid.

Oh boy. Mom wants to take it to court. Surely a good lawyer will explain that it's not an option.

  10. I could envision him saying all this to a man. I've been asked if I have children - usually when I'm interviewing a parent who lost a child.

I like Ike - his post. She should have given the player or the coach a chance to offer their perspective. Lesson 1.

Lesson 2: Source better. Even anonymous sources can be sourced better. Her sourcing comes across as hearsay, blogs.

The whole column felt like a cheap shot. I have no problem with her maintaining she's right if she is, but a little humility would go a long way.

The column was horseshit, but of course it's all true. These kinds of things are almost always because the damn thing hit way too close to home. If it was actually fiction, Gundy would have laughed it off. Gundy is pissed his boat has so many leaks.

Whatever. If his rage was true, he would have gone after anybody, Berry included. But agreed, Tramel would not have written such a horseshit piece.

What the hell are you talking about? It wasn't a contest winner, but it was fine. What was wrong with it?
