Oklahoma State coach Gundy blasts Oklahoman columnist

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by Precious Roy, Sep 22, 2007.

  1. Far too much, "Oh golly, I hope we can restore our relationship with Coach Gundy, who I've covered the last 20 years and is one heckuva guy." I expected a little more fire in defense of a colleague.

    That says a lot.

It's my contention, and has been from the beginning, that the colleague didn't deserve a defense. It was a shitty column. Why should a good writer like Tramel defend it?

    Because he wanted to?

  4. Well, he did defend her. It was just a bit tepid for my taste.

Fuck all this. The real question is:

What's Mike Gundy's budget for hail gel?

What Jerry said. This isn't Berry's first company picnic. Carlson and Gundy did their jobs poorly on Saturday and as one of the state's top media voices, he acted as something of a peacemaker. See, we say we hate the screaming heads ... and then get mad when a guy like Tramel takes a reasonable approach.

This thing gets better by the day.

The mom says the chicken thing didn't happen. And Jenni ... well, Jenni can't say a whole lot because she wasn't even there. Maybe that explains why she did such a crappy job of setting the scene ... because she didn't see it.

    Tile that up.

The mom said the chicken incident (edit: changed "it" to chicken incident) didn't happen, but the reporter should have asked for a clarification of what actually did happen. The mom was there. Jenni wasn't. The mom should have set the record straight. What if he asked the follow and the mom said "I don't have to" then she'd be just like Gundy.

Do you think she didn't ask the reporter for details on this?

    Are you folks that short-sighted?

I'm sure it was a story passed around the office as cannon fodder. "Yukyuk, Reid's momma was feeding him, yukyuk. Put that in your column, yukyuk."

She misfired majorly at the execution.

  11. What's funny to me about the chicken incident is I could see someone from SI using something like that as a positive, endearing detail in an athlete profile ... it's all about how the writer spins it.

The exact same could be said for the way Carlson used Reid's quote where he addressed his benching by basically accepting it and saying he'd just have to work harder to earn his spot back.

Carlson tried to spin those words into evidence that he's uncompetitive and lacks "fire in his belly". But, in different hands, that quote could just as easily have been used as evidence that he's a team player who took personal responsibility for his benching instead of whining about it or blaming others.
