Oklahoma State coach Gundy blasts Oklahoman columnist

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by Precious Roy, Sep 22, 2007.

  1. Not if you have proper attribution - any attribution ie. bystanders, reporters, etc. - or by giving the subject a chance to explain or add perspective to it. The column was a hatchet job. Even if it was factual it's obvious by her interpretation of events she's after the guy. She doesn't have a lot of credibility in my eyes.

Gundy? I really don't give a damn. He can act like an ass all he wants. It doesn't reflect on my profession.

It was her lede for crying out loud. This wasn't just some background in graph 13 to back up her point. It was her lede!

How do you build a column around an anecdote that you didn't see or hear ... or even learn about with enough detail to even describe it????

But you guys still only want to complain about Gundy being a jerk. Great, you're right, Gundy's a jerk. Breaking news: College FB coach is a jerk. That's some shocking stuff.

Excuse some of us for being a little more concerned about our profession taking yet another black eye.

OKIE, i read the column, and with the exception of the chicken-feeding thing, which is obviously the hot button issue here, i had no problem with it. i have no problem with calling him out about his attitude, his butterflies or talking about his potential transfer. and yes, we've all reported on things we havent seen, but be prepared for the backlash when someone calls you out on it. the beginning of the piece is what bothered me the most, like it has with everyone. she was trying to paint a picture without actually seeing what happened. and now because of what a beat writer said (who is getting off scott free on this, and why shouldnt he? he didnt write it) shes taking the backlash. stupid her.

One observation. It's one observation that she was not there for. She has observed the team for some time. Quit shaking the bone. There's no meat on it.

And yes, it was a bullshit column, but she simply used the chicken deal as a framing device for a bigger story. Yes, it was a bullshit story, but latching on to the chicken thing is stupid.

He didn't treat "all reporters" like shit. He only treated like shit the one reporter who treated his player like shit. And I would hardly say he's getting a "quasi-free pass" here, where there seems to be widespread concurrence that Gundy was an asshole whose tirade was grossly out-of-line. But you seem to misinterpret posts critical of Carlson's column as tacit support for Gundy. They are not, they are two entirely separate issues. And there's no inherent conflict in criticizing both when both deserve it.

  6. People on this site are letting Gundy get away with lying, and his lies ARE making our profession look worse.
I never said the column was great. I've said repeatedly it could have been more explicitly sourced, but I believe it has the facts straight.
I wouldn't be a bit surprised if some of those "stories told on the sly" are from Gundy or his staff.
But he screams about how it is inaccurate and the public goes, "Yeah! She's making up lies to go after Reid."
We know how big a deal it is if a journalist just makes something up. It is incredibly rare, but Gundy is at least implying it in this case.
As a journalist, that doesn't bother you? You would just let him get away with that?

  7. My problem is people claiming Gundy apologized -- or almost apologized -- when he did nothing of the sort.
Attack her, defend him, whatever, but let's at least get the facts straight.
    Otherwise "IT'S GARBAGE!"

im certain that most of it was true, but it all could have been avoided. she really didnt do her job to fullest extent.

  9. I agree 100 percent.
It still doesn't excuse his behavior.
    Two wrongs...

haha.... we agree! next question: when is this going to die, so gundy can go back to coaching and jenni can go back to being the journalist she was before all this came about? over/under? 2 weeks.

You hit it on the mark IU90. Read all the past pages and you'll see that nearly everyone is agreeing that Gundy acted like an asshole and was way out of line. We're past that. It's Carlson's bad column that most people are looking at as a disgrace to our profession as journalists.
    Gundy -- shithead
    Carlson -- bad column.

  12. I have a problem with it when my sources do it to me but that's between them and me - even if they make it public. I don't ask for the journalism community to come to my aid. I don't need it.
