Oklahoma State coach Gundy blasts Oklahoman columnist

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by Precious Roy, Sep 22, 2007.

  1. Fine, Write, but the public is already so distrustful of the media, I'll take all the help I can get if my credibility is unfairly questioned.

I still contend that the public doesn't care about whether the facts are correct or incorrect.

The important issue in their minds is they don't think we -- sportswriters -- should question the manhood of college athletes.

And that's where we're getting killed. The fact that she had no concrete proof for any of it just makes it worse.

The blame for that goes to Ms. Carlson, not the coach.

If she had the facts, why didn't she just state them? Instead she has "rumors and rumbling," and "story's told on the fly, "and "apparently." And she insinuates a lot. Those just scream for great facts and great reporting, right? Not.

  4. If it's unfair you've got nothing to worry about. I'm not convinced of that in this case so I'm not going to stick my neck out for a reporter I don't know - the public is distrustful of the media for a reason (we have bad reporters among us.)

Whole thing reminds me of Judith Miller - you don't hear anyone sticking up for her now.

Okie -- You are obviously too close to the columnist to be objective on this one.

There is nobody on these threads giving Gundy a free pass -- we all agree he acted like a moron, a jerk, an immature brat --- whatever and he came off sounding like a real idiot. He could have and should have handled this better but.....

The columnist, however, did a horrendous job on this, it was lazy "reporting" it was dishonest and it was completely fabricated that she "observed" anything and frankly her credibility DESERVES to be both questioned and attacked.

She didn't get a quote about the kid accepting a demotion, yet, she is going to interpret his body language? Now we find out she wasn't at the game where he had to be fed by his mother and then we find out OK State's practices are closed so she clearly isn't around the team ever.

Sorry, if you are going to call out an athlete, you better do much better than message board rumor mongering and taking the observations of others and trying to pass them off as your own.

This column she wrote was, to quote Gundy, garbage and the more we find out the facts of how it came to be, the more that point is solidified.

  6. I respectfully disagree that I'm too close to her. In fact, she and I have had some disagreements.
But I've also said about all I've got to say anyway.

    Really, IU?

    Really?

What about the room full of reporters he stiffed after that game because he wanted to make a dramatic exit after his tirade?

it was quite dramatic .. but i thought a "slow clap" was called for. the pro-gundy cronies in that room really dropped the ball.

Good point, I'd forgotten about her use of that "nerves" quote, yet something else that felt distinctly like a cheap shot. Kid confides in a reporter by admitting he deals with nerves before big games, other reporter later uses that quote to basically suggest he's a frightened sissy who can't lead. This truly was one of the more unfair hatchet jobs you'll ever read.

  11. He talked to her coworker a half-hour later - according to his column. Sounds like he was still giving interviews.

  12. I'm overwhelmed here. This thread just keeps going and going. I can't read it all. HELP! CALGON! TAKE ME AWAY!!!!!!
