Oklahoma State coach Gundy blasts Oklahoman columnist

Based on what I know about Jenni Carlson and Bobby Reid -- which mostly pertains to a series of straight-up blow job pieces she wrote on him last season -- I find it hard to believe she had it in for the guy.

Again, I'm somewhat of an outsider here, but I really believe what she wrote is close to the God's honest truth about Reid. I've heard so many similar stories about him before, and where there's smoke there's usually fire. I have no doubt Carlson wrote a column that, as an objective journalist, she thought needed to be written.

There are definite and serious problems with the execution, no doubt. But based on my limited knowledge of the situation, I really don't think she was "out to get" Bobby Reid.

  2. Perhaps not on a personal level. But it appears she had a hypothesis and did everything she could to support it with limited information and possibly unrelated facts. She didn't have the story but tried to force it anyway.

In short, she may not have been out to get Bobby Reid but she was out to get a story - and she didn't get it.

Yeah, I can agree with that. Thing is, I have a very solid feeling that her hypothesis is 100 percent correct. So I can see why she would want to write what she wrote.

  4. Sure, but you have to have the story and you have to know when you don't have it. That's something we all face every day.

That makes me wonder where the editors were. There have been many, many times I wanted to use something but an editor pulled it because sourcing wasn't quite strong enough or reliable enough. Thank goodness. At that point, you either run without it or you try again the next day.

Sorry if this has already been posted. I stopped posting at about page 13 or so, and didn't feel like going back to see if anyone had linked this.
It's Whitlock's take on the matter. He got this one EXACTLY right.

Yeah, I agree with that, too. I'm not defending this column in any way, shape or form. (Except to say that it might actually be 100 percent right. :) )

  7. Might.

But the ends don't justify the means. We need to be more transparent than this when at all possible. It's not like she's covering the pentagon. Should have quoted somefucking body on whether they think it's true.

I honestly don't think it was a very fair column - which also belies whether it's true or not.

I know. Not arguing that at all. Not arguing much of anything, really.

  9. I'm sorry, didn't mean to preach. I know we're on the same page. Just exorcising some of my feelings with her stupid column.

My three main points from this whole deal are thus:

    1) The column was not good and poorly sourced (even though it probably paints a pretty accurate picture).

    B) Gundy should have handled the situation better.

and III) Just because Carlson kind of screwed up the execution of this column doesn't mean an athlete of Bobby Reid's status, even a "amateur" athlete, doesn't deserve this kind of scrutiny. I've got no problem with the concept of the column, just how it actually came out.

And that's all I've got to say about that.

Other than that, Ms. Lincoln, how was the play?

Agreed with Some Guy, adding that the Big 12 should fine/discipline him, IMO. He screwed over the other reporters by storming out and refusing to take questions.
