I had the same thought about recruiting, Bill. I don't know how calculated it was, but I bet before doing this he at least considered whether putting on this public tirade against the press might send some football mamas the message that ole Coach Gundy'll have their boys' back if they come to OSU.

That is what strikes a nerve in me and I'm a male. It reminded me of an incident several years ago when a K.C. sports station reporter was getting ripped for asking a Chiefs player a question and when she explained to the afternoon sports show her side of it, the fucking hosts ripped her as well, for being a "dumb" woman in the locker room.

It's stupid shit like this that continues everywhere. What makes it worse is that the majority of the fanboys who drink the kool-aid will attack a female beat writer or t.v. reporter more harshly because the impression is that she doesn't know shit about sports.

    More than half, in fact.

It'd be far more impressive if you gents could figure out how to insult someone without referring to them as a part of the female anatomy.

Or she may be. Attractive is in the eye of the beholder. I think she is attractive. Some may disagree.

Not that it matters. Just saying. The post reads as if you think she's not attractive. Maybe you meant that, maybe you didn't, but I felt an opposing view was in order at this time.

(But I'll be horrified if this thread turns into a referendum on her looks. Please don't let that happen, despite my attempt to present some balance.)

Lugnuts would be proud of you, sc.

Of course, I wonder if either of you has never called someone a dick. ;)

Jenni Carlson should come back with a "Behold, the power of the Internet column" in regards to the viral video of Gundy. I wouldn't put it past her.

I have. I won't lie about that. But I've made an serious decision (made it long ago, in fact) not to do so, because doing so fosters an environment in which this sort of behavior is acceptable and adopted as a norm.

I have nothing to do with the Big 12, so maybe someone else can speak with more authority on it. But since I have nothing better to do on a Sunday night, I listened to Gundy's teleconference from today. Basically he said if he had it to do over again, he would have written out a prepared statement rather than shooting from the hip. He said he didn't read the article until after the game, which seems fairly strange to me. Don't know of many coaches who celebrate a win by reading the paper before addressing the media.

He said all the papers are laid out on the tables during brunch for the players so they can read about "high schools" and read about what's been written, but Saturday all of the papers were confiscated since the article was so "poorly" written. He didn't bother to read it then because he had a game to prepare for. Then after the game he read it.

I have misgivings on both sides of this.

Professional athlete: Reid's scholarship and all that goes with it might very well rival the amount of money Carlson is making at the newspaper. The line between amateur and professional is a very blurry one.

Gundy's reaction: I thought it validated some points in the column. "This was brought to me by a mama," would seem another example of the coddling that was referenced. On top of that, it looked like he was responding to a perceived cheap shot with another cheap shot, which in my book is unprofessional.

Reid's attitude: Carlson's approach was borderline tabloid. If you're going to go this route, whether it's in a column or a story, you'd better have something more concrete than "rumors and rumblings," and his mama putting a piece of chicken in his mouth. At least get a teammate to say, even on condition of anonymity, that he's a cancer in the clubhouse. Even as a columnist, you have to be a better reporter than that.

Questioning his toughness: I dunno ... maybe that crossed a line. The AJC this week questioned Georgia's collective toughness, but stopped short of saying this player or that player specifically is a wimp. To me, this doesn't feel the same as Scottie Pippen begging off a free throw.

Oh, I'm sure I have, but it often seems as if the first insult out thrown out, at least on here, refers to a woman's anatomy. It gets old, and as journalists, we can be much more creative than that.

Absolutely. About a lot of things.
