IIRC from baseball, insurance on big stars isn't easy to come by. It's just too big and expensive to be worth the risk.

Beats the incessant "U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!" chants that you'd still be hearing from south of the border if it had gone that way.

Wonder if Colangelo would consider taking over the United States Olympic hockey effort? ;D Good point i.e. post-Athens.

Yeah, for all my dislike of Colangelo, he's done a good job of reviving the program after the Athens embarrassment.

I do wonder, however, aside from coach and player selection (not too hard with a nation of all-stars), what exactly does a GM do? It's not like they are making trades or negotiating contracts.

I read that Steve Yzerman was stepping down from Team Canada. OK, fine, two Olympics is probably enough. I think Wayne Gretzky did two. They'll find someone competent and everything will be fine. These tournaments are so short that it's hardly a measuring stick of a GM or coach. I mean, you lose one game at the wrong time for whatever reason and perception radically changes.

How dumb is Nicklas Backstrom, to take some banned drug the day before the gold medal game? Even if he didn't know, surely the team has people who oversee that stuff, eh?

You're right. I do prefer it this way but wish a lot of Canadians (particularly those who don't watch much hockey to begin with) would STFU.

True. A lot of Canadian fans are obnoxious. But that hardly makes them unique.

Respectfully disagree. Too many Canadian wrap up our national identity in hockey so they become insufferable douchebags around all things hockey related.

Hockey dominance is held too dear by the "YOU THINK YOU'RE BETTER THAN ME???" crowd.

Hockey IS part of our national identity whether you like it or not. It doesn't mean you're a douchebag because it's something you're proud of.

Enjoy it as being important to us as Canadians. Embrace it. I don't think we should get all worked up if people in other countries don't give a shit. Seriously, who cares?

Do you burn couches in Canada, like we do in College Park, MD?

What started that riot in Vancouver?
