One of our reporters talked to one of the USA handball players, just in case the team made the Olympics since he is from our area. He was a Division I basketball player, and he said that the USA would be a world power in handball if even marginal NBA players were taught the game.

I think it happened in boxing either 04 or 08. Half the field was from former Soviet republics.

They're between a rock and a hard place. The carribean islands, esp. Jamaica, have stolen the show in some of the sprints, while the Africans, esp Kenya, dominate the distance events. Heck, think the US has it bad? How many track medals has all of Europe won? Obviously, track is important in Europe... people actually pay to watch meets. So if track become irrelevant in Europe, the sport has a big problem on its hands.

Interesting. Does he play in a European league? I agree the US has so many good athletes who could learn the game pretty easily.

US has a silver in the men's 1,500 and a silver in the men's 10,000.

That is unheard of for most of our lifetimes.

How does a sport becoming popular in other places of the world cause a sport to have a big problem on its hands?

Outside of the 110H, it's been a bizarro Olympics for the men's side of the track team. As a fan of distance running, I love it.

Not so much that. But Europe is where most of the Grand Prix events are held. If those become unprofitable, what happens?

Brazil trying to make a comeback against Argentina in men's basketball. Argentines have been living at the free throw line.

Great theory, but the two nations with the most track and field golds behind the U.S. are Britain and Russia with three. Germany, Croatia, Belarus, Hungary, Kazakhstan and Poland have one each.

Final: Gold for Brittany Reese; Bronze for Janay Loach in the women's long jump.

Russia's Elena Sokolova gets the Silver.

US wins 7 of the 12 medals up for grabs in track and field tonight.
