And now, the water polo gold medal match. I'm sure Doc will extend his tradition by giving shout-outs to winners of minor and college water polo leagues during breaks in the action.

That is true. That was a great team. Downgraded a bit because they didn't get to face the Soviets and other eastern block teams.

"Up next the finals of rythmic gymnastics." In other words, time to see what else is on.

Davis is this Olympics' walking victory cigar.

Never really felt the US would lose a game, but it would have been nice to see Blake Griffin play. Hope he can make a full recovery from his injury.

This USA men's basketball team was pretty damn fun to watch. Spain was great too. But neither team would come within 20 of the Dream Team.

BTW, for those who thought that the Opening Ceremonies could have done better at highlighting British music, the Closing Ceremonies may be more your speed. Madness and Pet Shop Boys already.

Oh, but fuck me, what is this unholy shit? One Direction?! Shit, I take it back.

The one thing that was evident throughout both the men's and women's tournaments is that no other country can hang with the US for a full 40 minutes.

A team might have three or four players who are as good as the top US players but there is a pretty massive drop-off in talent once you get any deeper into the roster than that. Teams just wear down.

Yeah I think that game shut down any possible claim that this team could play with the '92 team. If they couldn't handle Pau Gasol inside, they'd have no prayer against Ewing and Robinson, not to mention Malone.

    Davies was awful too.

Random thought: I know it's probably not big enough, and of course it can't afford it now, but how much fun would an Olympics in Dublin be?

(Other than the inevitable constant rain, that is.)

Probably not as fun as Rio in '16
