This big-city Yankee's venturing down to 'bama next month for a break between seasons.

I'm staying somewhere 'round Auburn, though I'm flying via Atlanta.

Is there anything I should see or do on my Southern weekend?

Pittsburgh Fish Market in the Westin next to the convention center is highly recommended.

  4. Going to Orlando next month for a long weekend of spring training.

Looking for suggestions for a good deal on a hotel, preferably near the Braves' complex.

Recent college grad, so cheapness is much more important than quality of hotel. But trying to avoid places with Crabs in the sheets (been down that road already in Daytona. Never again).

Suggestions for specific hotels or web search engines are greatly appreciated! PM me or reply to this thread.

    Thanks a lot!

  5. I should be able to offer you more than this since I lived in Pittsburgh for 18+ years but...

DeLuca's is great. Small joint in the Strip District, which is basically downtown. Assuming you're covering a pro or college game? you'll be close to there. Great homemade type breakfast any time of day...pretty cheap, too.

Kazansky's Deli. It's in the "Jewish" part of the 'burgh...used to be called "Rhoda's." The area is called Squirrel Hill, it's about 30 seconds off the sq. hill exit. Great sandwiches stacked thick, jewish feeling...I'm Jewish, so sue me, I like to eat kosher meat :)

Another good deli downtown is Smallman Street Deli. Owned by Jews but no kosher, I don't think. Great food, a little pricey for a sandwich but worth it. Awesome pickles and cookies.

Hope this helps, I know these aren't good recommendations for "formal" meals.

I may be enjoying a few days in Myrtle Beach, S.C in the coming week or two. What are some the must-see things in the region, cool day trips or things to do within city limits?

Also, any restaurant/local must-dos would be appreciated.

Also considering visiting Charleston and/or Wilmington, N.C., so suggestions there would be great. Is US 17 a decent drive in either direction?

  7. Not much of a NASCAR fan but I liked the NASCAR Café at Myrtle Beach, couldn't tell you where it is but it's in the vicinity. There is also this great buffet with steak and lobster. It's like $20 a person but man it was worth every cent.

If you're into the college girls, check out the main stretch of town...hehe spring breaks are starting soon, they'll be running rampant :)

If you're going to Auburn, you could always swing by Toomer's Drugstore in downtown and get some homemade lemonade. it's a neat little downtown. the mellow mushroom down the block from the drugstore makes a pretty tasty pizza too.

if you can't find something fun in atlanta, god help ya. one of the tourist attractions I've always enjoyed there is the world of coca-cola museum. it's right by underground atlanta.

I've always wanted to go to abdullah the butcher's house of ribs, which is run by the famous former professional wrestler. it's a rib shack and chinese food joint. never have gotten around to it though.

Does anyone have advice for planning a trip to the Grand Canyon? When is the best time to go, and when should be avoided? What are the must sees, and how long a trip is ideal?

  12. Don't go with Clark Griswold when he's behind schedule. He'll just want to take a quick glance, nod his head and drive on to the next stop.
