Hook a guy up with the restaurant scoop on the bustling Sanford, N.C., area, site of my hotel for the Open. Some decent looking places but I'll take any advice for places within 25 miles or so.

    Philadelphia, anyone?

I'll be heading there for a weekend jaunt soon, to catch a Phillies game and possibly hop over to Atlantic City, and need some good places to dine and booze.

If you want authenticity, it's all about Pat's Steak's, just a few blocks from Broad Street.

  4. Make sure you hit Pat's (and if you have the stomach Geno's) while your there. On 9th street just off Broad.

Get a gelati at Ritas, best thing about Philly during the summer months.

As for nightlife, I was always in town for athletics so I never really got to experience that. I hear South Street and Penn's Landing are both pretty cool.

I've had fun on South Street. Rita's is a chain with about a gazillion stands around the region. Not nearly as important as Pat's.

We have a Rita's near the park.

Line of 20-30 people whenever I drive by, which is quite frequently.

    Never been.

    Am I missing out?

For great Italian in Philly, I recomend Ralph, in the Italian section. Fantastic.

  8. Anyone going to be in Carson, Calif. for the USATF Outdoor Nationals? PM me.

Testudo, I swear if I ever had the money, I'd stick a Rita's somewhere here. I'd bet you couldn't keep the place stocked.

I'll vouch for the Penn's Landing area. And coug, quality Philly cheesesteaks can be had at places other than Gino's and Pat's, though they are the most famous.

On an unrelated note - and not a joke - can anyone recommend any good golf courses in the Reno/Tahoe area? I'm heading out there with my fiancee when she has her staff retreat; as much as I'd like to stay in the hotel all day and gamble away my pittance of a salary, I don't think that would be a great idea in the long-term. So can anyone recommend a decent course that won't kill me financially?

Nate, you can't turn around in this area without stepping on a Rita's. They're everywhere.

Cougar girl, here are some pointers to make your stay in Philly and AC enjoyable.
1, stay away from the Geno's -Pats' steakhouse duel on Passayunk Avenue. Anyone who has spent time in the city knows that these are two big tourist traps and you can probably get a better cheese steak right around the corner.
2, If you want a delicious hoagie, we highly recommend the Fresh Grocer market at 56th and Market Street. For $5.89, you'll get a hoagie with so much meat that you could make two more hoagies. Sometimes, there is a line, but it's well worth the wait.
3, While in AC do go to the evening, not morning, not afternoon, but evening buffet at Virginia City in the Wild Wild West casino. They have real steak, although you'll only get one that is the size of you plate, cooked to order on the menu.
    4. Watch yourself on Pacific Avenue in AC at night, especially around Resorts Casino. The freaks do come out at night.
