It was easier when Scorsese was doing it with Taxi Driver in 1976 than this environment.

Are you sure there just weren't more $3 million movies being made?

Look at Crazy Rich Asians, which is getting a huge push from entrepreneurs and community groups. Even that took $30M to make.

I also think there are more than a few indies that would have stunk with a larger budget. More than a few indie directors have difficulty with the larger budgets and the increased oversight that comes with them.

I said it on the "Last Movie You Watched" thread, but "Get Out" is a film that will be studied for decades. The way Peele so masterfully made seemingly innocent statements sound so sinister was not only a triumph of writing, it was a masterclass in social criticism.

"Important" is an overused term as it relates to cinema, but this film was important.

    $30 million is cheap.
When Taxi Driver was made they were only making $3 million movies. The good ones and the bad ones. Jaws cost only $9 million and it was massively over budget.

It was Hitchcock meets Spike Lee. I'm hopeful it encourages other genre-mashups and just saying a movie is "like Get Out...." earns it a green light. On the short list of movies as entertaining as they were thought-provoking. The best I could compare it to is Dr. Strangelove or Tootsie.
