I'm not a writer. Actually I'm a rap music producer so I get it.

That was a terrible column. Lazy, insensitive, stupid. Mostly lazy, though. Was it printed under the Albom rules where you have to print it word for word or something? Or did someone just think they were being provocative?

And this just in for those who think using the word is an acceptable art form.

NABJ Condemns Columnist Phil Mushnick and New York Post Editors for Racially Insensitive Reference

WASHINGTON, DC ( May 5, 2012) -- Known for its provocative headlines, the New York Post has botched another attempt to gain attention with journalism that lacks taste and class. The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) condemns sports columnist Phil Mushnick and Post editors for printing racially insensitive references regarding music mogul and New Jersey Nets minority owner Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter in a column yesterday.
"It does not surprise me that the writer and editors in question lack the journalistic chops to eloquently make a point about Jay-Z's influence in the Nets franchise," said NABJ President Gregory Lee, who also is senior assistant sports editor at the Boston Globe. "Mr. Mushnick's crusade against the gang mentality in sports has taken a wrong turn in this piece of lazy journalism. This commentary does not follow the principles of our craft."
NABJ Sports Task Force chair Marc J. Spears adds: "It's embarrassing and unfortunate that the use of the n-word and other derogatory terms have been a staple in lyrics throughout the history of hip-hop. But two wrongs don't make a right. I find it appalling that a newspaper would be comfortable allowing such a demeaning word in its publication and that its editors did not use better judgment in supervising a columnist with a disappointing and misguided mentality."
In 2009, NABJ condemned the newspaper for depicting the nation's first African American Commander in Chief as a dead chimpanzee.
"The language used in today's New York Post column, titled 'Nets on Jay-Z track,' was disgusting and completely out of line," New York Association of Black Journalists President Michael J. Feeney said. "Columnist Phil Mushnick and the editors who allowed his offensive language to be published should be ashamed of themselves. We demand an explanation and an apology from Mushnick and Post management, and we want to be assured this vile word will never appear in this publication again."

I wonder if Gregory Lee has ever taken Jay Z to task for his misogynist lyrics.

Wasn't Mr Lee the guy who jumped on SJ to suggest that The Washington Times needed to hire more African American writers?

Using a slang term in his statement does not sound very professional but I leave it to the experts to decide. I might have used "expertise" or "savvy" instead of "chops", which sounds kind of crude.

Yes, Lee did chime in about the Times hirings.

I wonder if the NABJ jumped in last week to criticize Delmon Young. Phil Mushnick did:

"Meanwhile, given that Young has been accused of both racially profiling and assaulting his victim — witnesses claim he was shouting, “F---ing Jews!” — MSNBC’s Rev. Al Sharpton today will lead a demonstration of civil rights activists in front of NYPD HQ to protest Young’s release on a meager $5,000 bail.

    Yeah, sure.

Perhaps a more appropriate action would be to have Young, a power hitter, to write a 500-word essay on the greatest slugger in Tigers history, Hank Greenberg, a “F---ing" Jew.”

No, Drip chimed in on The Times' hirings. Greg mentioned that he'd spoken to me and was taken to task by several people who had no fucking clue what they were talking about even after I told them what was up with Greg's call.

But that has nothing to with this discussion, beyond me trying to make clear again that Greg did nothing out of bounds when it came to our hires.

Phil also jumped on ESPN for hiring Hip Hop artist Nas for the NFL draft:

Picking Nas for NFL Draft music shows ESPN’s hypocrisy

Wait a second. ESPN recently suspended anchor Max Bretos for innocently saying “chink in the armor” when referencing Jeremy Lin. Yet, last week ESPN issued a press release proudly announcing that it has hired “Hip-Hop Superstar Nas” to provide music for ESPN’s NFL Draft coverage.

Check out Nas’s lyrics on the Internet. I randomly stumbled upon “Ether.” Even by standard gangsta garbage — “F” this and that, loaded with references to black men as “N----s” and the sexual degradation of young women, homophobic rants, odes to assault weapons and drugs — Nas’s “artistry” is sub-human.

Check it out for yourself. And no accidental or innocents slips of his tongue, such as “chink in the armor.”

I challenge any ESPN or Disney executive to publicly recite the lyrics of Ether, written and performed by Nas, then as publicly state, “Yep, he’s just the guy for us!”

And why does ESPN feel that its NFL Draft coverage needs to be covered by any music, let alone choosing a professional creep? Because he’s popular? So is crack.

In a sports world gone nuts, ESPN is, in fact, the worldwide leader.

I guess Nas does not like Jay Z either:

    "Ether"

    [gunshots]

    [2Pac talking]
    ("Fuck Jay-Z")
What's up niggas, ay yo, I know you ain't talking 'bout me dog
    You, what?
    ("Fuck Jay-Z")
You been on my dick nigga, you love my style, nigga
    ("Fuck Jay-Z")

    [Chorus]
    (I) Fuck with your soul like ether
(Will) Teach you the king you know you
(Not) "God's son" across the belly
(Lose) I prove you lost already

Brace yourself for the main event
    Y'all impatiently waiting
It's like an AIDS test, what's the results?
Not positive, who's the best? Pac, Nas and Big
Ain't no best, East, West, North, South, flossed out, greedy
    I embrace y'all with napalm
Blows up, no guts, left chest, face gone
    How could Nas be garbage?
    Semi-autos at your cartilage
Burner at the side of your dome, come outta my throne
I got this, locked since '9-1
I am the truest, name a rapper that I ain't influenced
Gave y'all chapters but now I keep my eyes on the Judas
With Hawaiian Sophie fame, kept my name in his music
    Check it

    [Chorus]

    [talking]
Ay yo, pass me the weed, pour my ashes out on these niggas man (no doubt)
Ay, y'all faggots, y'all kneel and kiss the fucking ring

    [Chorus]

I've been fucked over, left for dead, dissed and forgotten
Luck ran out, they hoped that I'd be gone, stiff and rotten
Y'all just piss on me, shit on me, spit on my grave (uh)
Talk about me, laugh behind my back but in my face
Y'all some "well wishers," friendly acting, envy hiding snakes
With your hands out for my money, man, how much can I take?
When these streets keep calling, heard it when I was sleep
That this Gay-Z and Cockafella Records wanted beef
Started cocking up my weapon, slowly loading up this ammo
To explode it on a camel, and his soldiers, I can handle
This for dolo and it's manuscript, just sound stupid
When KRS already made an album called Blueprint
First, Biggie's ya man, then you got the nerve to say that you better than Big
Dick sucking lips, why not you let the late, great veteran live

    [talking]
    (I...will...not...lose)
"God's son" across the belly, I prove you lost already
The king is back, where my crown at?
(Ill...will) Ill Will rest in peace, let's do it niggas

    [Chorus]

Y'all niggas deal with emotions like bitches
What's sad is I love you 'cause you're my brother
You traded your soul for riches
My child, I've watched you grow up to be famous
And now I smile like a proud dad, watching his only son that made it
You seem to be only concerned with dissing women
Were you abused as a child, scared to smile, they called you ugly?
Well life is hard, hug me, don't reject me
Or make records to disrespect me, blatent or indirectly
In '88 you was getting chased through your building
Calling my crib and I ain't even give you my numbers
All I did was gave you a style for you to run with
Smiling in my face, glad to break bread with the god
Wearing Jaz chains, no tecs, no cash, no cars
No jail bars Jigga, no pies, no case
Just Hawaiian shirts, hanging with little Chase
    You a fan, a phony, a fake, a pussy, a Stan
I still whip your ass, you thirty-six in a karate class
You Tae-bo hoe, tryna' work it out, you tryna' get brolic?
Ask me if I'm tryna' kick knowledge
Nah, I'm tryna' kick the shit you need to learn though
That ether, that shit that make your soul burn slow
Is he Dame Diddy, Dame Daddy or Dame Dummy?
Oh, I get it, you Biggie and he's Puffy
Rockefeller died of AIDS, that was the end of his chapter
And that's the guy y'all chose to name your company after?
Put it together, I rock hoes, y'all rock fellas
And now y'all try to take my spot, fellas?
Philly's hot rock fellas, put you in a dry spot, fellas
In a pine box with nine shots from my glock, fellas
Foxy got you hot 'cause you kept your face in her puss
What you think, you getting girls now 'cause of your looks?
    Ne-gro please
You no mustache having, with whiskers like a rat
    Compared to Beans you wack
And your man stabbed Un and made you take the blame
You ass, went from Jaz to hanging with Caine, to Herb, to Big
And, Eminem murdered you on your own shit
You a dick-riding faggot, you love the attention
Queens niggas run you niggas, ask Russell Simmons
Ha, R-O-C get gunned up and clapped quick
J.J. Evans get gunned up and clapped quick
Your whole damn record label gunned up and clapped quick
Shawn Carter to Jay-Z, damn you on Jaz dick
So little shorty's getting gunned up and clapped quick
How much of Biggie's rhymes is gonna come out your fat lips?
Wanted to be on every last one of my classics
You pop shit, apologize, nigga, just ask Kiss

The fact the Mushnick thinks Delmon Young is a power hitter only underlines my point that he doesn't know what the hell he's writing about.
