Way off on a tangent, but Ronney Jenkins was a prep in my area, and he spelled his name at times Ronnie and at times Ronney.

Also, when Pedro Feliz first came up to the big leagues with the Giants, they listed his name as Pedro Felix. He let it go for a couple years before telling anyone.

Back in the day Barton County Community College in Kansas had a guy playing basketball named Norvett Jacques, last name pronounced like Jax. He transferred to Rider, which happened to play at Kansas the next year. Since the guy was originally from Wichita the KU announcers made sure to point out he had decided to start pronouncing his name Jay-Cuze.

Throughout his high school career, Daunte Culpepper was known to the local newspapers, his coaches and school administrators as Duante.

Again, I might use two or three names from the other team. The press boxes here (1A-3A schools) generally do not even have a roster, and if they do it's from some obscure source. I always try to call the schools to get one faxed, but generally they don't do it (my guess is no fax machine...). When my choices are press box roster and kids on the sidelines, I'm going with the kids.

There once was a family stationed on Fort Knox with the last name Piyamanothamkul. That name was a bitch to spell, especially in agate form.

One PA would never get full rosters so whenever a player not on the roster made a play he had a made up player Otis Katkavich make the play. This went on for about 20 years. Then one day the PA guy called and said I needed to come to the next game along with another guy who covered a lot of games at that stadium.

That night Otis Katkavich Jr. made his first tackle. About a year later higher ups told the PA guy to stop using the name.

While sitting in the press box of a 4A girls soccer game, I heard the PA, a high school kid, talking with another student in the next room over.

Friend - "You know that Russell Brand guy is gay, right?"
PA - "Nah, he's just British."
