Overheard in the press box

I laughed at the flyover line, and didn't consider it political at all. Just thought it was a funny retort.

Everyone needs to calm down a bit, probably.

As an aside to this thread, I learned long ago to be careful about ripping the players and making too many snarky comments in the press box, because there are team employees in there who will throw you under the bus with the players.

    To follow up BB's post:

A PR director had heard enough of our crew of writers making fun of players. He earnestly inquired how we could poke fun at a player in the press box and then go into the clubhouse with a serious look and sympathize as said player explained how he lost the ball in the sun.

As I recall, we all sort of shrugged. Long season. Coping mechanism. Something like that.

My favorite "press box" moment was when we had to share a center section with the visiting assistant coaches at a high school football game. They brought one more than the usual load, so they kicked out one of the local writers who came in later then the rest of us and weren't exactly nice about it.

A vet writer from the local "big" paper, who shall remain nameless, went absolutely ape shit and started a heated argument over it. This guy was probably 5-foot-6 and was ready to brawl with all three assistant coaches.

Everything eventually calmed down. The guy, who got kicked out, offers to go sit in the bleachers. The vet writer turns to him and says; "Come back in a quarter and a half, Podunk will be down 40 and these three assholes will be moping on the bus."

I found it funny. I also agreed with, and understood the "sound of freedom" comment.

I believe this was the same weekend they brought in the helicopter to dry out the outfield with the rotation of its blades, no?

Sometimes team employees say the harsh words about players. Case in point, from many, many years ago. Mike Torrez is on the mound for the Sox at Fenway Park. Line drive through the box catches him square on the squash, and Torrez is laid out flat. There's blood and such, and the trainer and medics arrive on the mound in a nanosecond.
And a Red Sox official of many years seniority (and a wonderful guy who is no longer with us) says, with a loud sigh, "There's always something with Taco."

Yep. They actually played later that day.
