It is indisputably plagiarism, and it's being tolerated at the supposed World Leader. Don't even hedge it by saying some of it is paraphrased. The tiny differences could easily be linear editing after Hoppes filed the nuggets. Here's the original work involved, on a very consistent basis: Control-C, Control-V.

For me, you don't mitigate plagiarism by the value of what's being stolen. If you do it, especially on a national website, you think it's acceptable and that you can get away with it. He may be right about that.

Agreed. It's important to ask what else is being copied if he's not even bothering to edit the Wikipedia entries he's pasted before hitting submit.

    That's unforgivable.

Love the way the ESPN spokesman tries to redefine plagiarism as "journalistic laziness." College students have to go before honor code committees when they're caught doing this stuff, and the penalties are often severe. But I guess standards shouldn't be as stringent for, you know, guys that actually write for a living.

Get used to this kind of response from more and more American companies: "Nope, we're good. We're going to continue to do what we do, make whatever money we can, and dare people to blackball us."

I stole that from another thread. Corner office, Bristol!

The suits must have told Hoppes: "Don't say a word about this publicly. Get it?"

Given event of the last 15 months, it should be obvious that nothing - not a freaking thing - would rise to the level of a fireable offense when it comes to Hoppes.

He is absolutely bulletproof at ESPN.

Maybe he'll just have Wikipedia access blocked on his company computer.

Prediction: He doesn't get axed, but he slides quietly into a lower-profile job.
