  1. How come he didn't learn to re-write World Book entries in 6th grade like the rest of us?

Prediction: Nothing happens, no one hears about it.

Move along, nothing to see here.

Y'all click that link Rey posted. Hoppes was "scolded" for "journalistic laziness."

So it's over. Nothing to see here. Until, of course, the ombudsman weighs in on it.

Whether or not anything happens is less important and less interesting than what this episode says about where we're at as an industry today. Does anyone seriously think that copying and pasting Wikipedia is worse than what Maureen Dowd did. She lifted a 43-word chunk from a Talking Points Memo columnist in 2009 representing someone else's ideas - not facts - as her own. Dowd has a role in shaping public opinion in issues of international significance for the world's most prestigious publication. Hoppes was working in a blog post factory. If the New York Times ignores what by every objective measure is a much more egregious offense (Dowd was not even suspended), why would we expect ESPN to hold Hoppes to a higher standard?

Do those of you defending, admittedly half-assedly, Lynn Hoppes not realize who he is and where he is? This guy is in a position that makes him among the most influential and highest paid sports journalists in the country. This is a crucible for the World Wide Leader. Hoppes has been mocked jokingly before, sure, but this is a test of the integrity of the single most important sports journalism outfit in the world. The stakes are Really Fucking High right now in this matter.

You're right, but, really, the word journalism and ESPN don't belong in the same sentence.

Isn't what Dowd did worse? And isn't she a more influential figure?

Tucson, Can't we be upset with Hoppes and Dowd? Not sure what one has to do with the other, and it's not like Dowd was ignored here.

In addition, it appears Hoppes has made a long pattern of this version of plagiarism.

    Dowd transgression > Hoppes transgression.

Dowd transgression vs. Hoppes' 4,328 transgressions?

    A little tougher call.

Yeah, they are separate issues. Not sure why you are beating that drum. Seems like a personal thing. Both should have been punished harshly.
