I don't have anything personal against Dowd, and my politics happen to be pretty much in the same zip code. I'm beating the drum on this because when NYT publishers met in some board room and decided to overlook Dowd's plagiarism, that changed industry standards. It established a precedent that only a publication of the NYT's stature can. Plagiarism had always been considered one of the worst offenses a journalist can commit. But when they left that meeting, plagiarism meant something different than it did when they went in.

Hey, guys, OJ Simpson got away with murder, so I'm going to go kill some people. After all, if he did it, then that's how EVERYTHING AFTER IT should be handled.

In the Simpson case, a man was on trial. Not the seriousness of murder. When the NYT board decided to let Dowd skate on plagiarism, it wasn't facts they were disputing. It was how serious an offense plagiarism is. And they said not bad enough to even warrant a public reprimand.

Werd. Doesn't matter what NYT did or didn't do. It's up to ESPN how to discipline and doubt they are looking back and saying, "Well that Dowd woman got away with it, so ... "
