I'll cop to this a little bit maybe 10 years ago or whenever. But remember, at one time the APSE Bulletin was ripping SportsJournalists.com in print, so Hoppes was at least going the other way, for whatever reason. I have to give him that, but that's as far as that goes now.

Good to see Carrie back here.

I know Mizzou and a few others praised his talent for finding good journalists, and there have been some good folks pass through there. But I think that was mostly because the paper was so good under McKenzie that good journalists wanted to work there.

He has sock puppets, surely, and I'm inclined to think one has posted on his thread.

I'll take that Ace. Thank you.
Now about Lynn Hoppes, I believe if nothing has been done by now, he's still safe at ESPN. The outrage of it all.

So Van would be rolling in his grave but he missed the boat on Hoppes? I am not defending Hoppes at all, since I believe he should be fired, but if Van was the genius that is believed, how the hell did he have such a fraud sitting next to him?

Wicked, you might be correct ... but to be clear I'm Mr. SockPuppet, no imitators. :)

Pancamo - I can't speak to this situation because I don't know. What I do know is hiring is an inexact science. Kind of like drafting. You do everything you can to make the right call. If you do enough of it, you'll whiff here and there. I've hired a lot of people at my two stops. I'm pretty proud of my track record in that department. I'd hire almost all - but not all - of them again.

Now everyone I hired who happens to read this is likely thinking, "Is that sumbitch talking about ME?" NO, not you!

Reminds me of a story we did in Richmond years ago on Dave Robbins - the writer asked for his all-time team of those who had played for him. He listed four guys and said, "I'm going to leave it at that and let everyone else think he's the fifth guy."
