I'm all for putting a bunch of Halberstam's best pieces on Playbook. Then again, I might just skip Playbook altogether and start reading Summer of '49

I truly like and respect the man based on what he did while he was in Orlando.

I'm guessing this ESPN stop hasn't been what he hoped it would be.

Drip, regardless of how he built his career, regardless whether he was lazy and careless, it certainly appears that on several occasions he insulted his craft by not giving a damn and taking the easy way out. That right there tells me all I need to know about Lynn Hoppes.

Hey, I'm just as insulted and shocked by all of this. However, I just said many calling for his head sound as if they are venting. That's all I'm saying.

Absolutely not ... Hoppes (and I hate to use the word) is a "star," and the stars are allowed to get away with stuff that would get most journalists shit-canned ...

I don't know him and never had any dealings with him, directly or indirectly.

But given the evidence, if he wasn't fired and escorted out of the building by noon today, or had the dignity to step down and walk away of his own choosing, that says all you need to know about both him and ESPN.

Drip -- If this was any other editor who hired someone who basically ran a ponzi scheme without ever meeting them AND then after that all of a sudden someone finds out that you cut and paste on a bunch of stories, that person would be fired on the spot.
Lynn accomplished a lot in Orlando, but Jesus Christ, Van McKenzie would be spinning in his grave if he saw this stuff.

I think more people are saying they expect him to be fired than are calling for his head.

How did you determine that he was a hard worker, by the way?

The problem is that people put Lynn on a "special pedestal." In reality, he was as big of a screwup as many others in this business.
There's a lesson here: be careful who you select as stars and studs.

I met Lynn at a journalism conference for college journalists in Louisville two years ago and his entire seminar was about finding something no one else is an expert on and becoming the "go to source" on it.

I wish I could get that hour and a half back...

My dealings with him gave me that observation but then again, that and 50 cents might get you coffee at McDonald's. Where are you trying to go with this?
