I don't entirely disagree with what you said about the personal attacks. But Hoppes trashed his own reputation via serial plagiarizing.

As has been noted above, by Mizzou I believe, if you were a writer you loved Lynn.

Problem was, not everyone in that department is a writer.

Nothing you said in your post actually goes against anything else that's been said. Except for the part about "Lynn and the staff" I suppose, since aside from going to meetings and "shielding" writers from being told things that might upset them ... well ...

Last time I remembered IGAJ, Schmadtke was an editor for a little bit so he saw it from both sides.

Then his statement of "If you were a writer in Orlando, Lynn was a great boss to have." is a little more damning, no?

Could be, but for those who have been in management and then have had the opportunity to go back to reporting, they would agree that being out of the office and not dealing with the day to day crap is a Godsend.
Let's put it this way, and I'm not trying to take this thread on a different course, but the former SE in Orlando was a frequent poster on here and there were a lot of the same complaints about him that I've heard through the years on Lynn.
The biggest difference though is that at least he didn't copy and paste of Wikipedia or hire someone sight unseen who ran a scam.

That Borges thread ran for eight days and 10 pages. This one is heading into Day 12 and is on Page 15. Why was the Borges thread shorter? Well, maybe because the Globe addressed that situation. This one is unlikely to run its course until ESPN addresses this situation.

I wonder why the National Sports Journalism Center has ignored this. If you do a search on its website, it has not ignored other allegations of plagiarism in the past, in fact linking to blog reports (TBL) on such matters. For that matter, it has linked to Deadspin reports that cast an unfavorable light on other sports media figures. So there is precedent for not ignoring the Hoppes situation. Unless some of the folks there have some personal reasons for wanting this all to die down quietly.

And still no word from ESPN.

Not true, a rep told a website Hoppes got a "scolding" for "lazy journalism." The link is a couple pages back.

Anyway, I'm sure the Poynter ombuds will weigh in very, very soon. And being Poynterites, I know they will condemn Hoppes. I'm just sure of it.

It's much easier to condemn a no-name staffer somewhere than call out a star. I expect Hoppes to win some ESPN award in the next few years.

Nah, Poynter is the paragon of journalistic integrity. They won't hesitate to hammer him. I'm just sure of it. They must be on vacation though, that's why it has been written yet.

    Yeah, that's the ticket.

I say this anonymously, and I've contributed to this thread plenty already, but it's a commendable thing when people step up on this site, use their own name and defend someone. Schmadtke doesn't disappoint that way.
