I don't know if they'd go as far as to issue a pre-emptive blanket waiver for any kid who wants to transfer but the NCAA has made it easier for kids to get the year waived on a case-by-case basis the last few years.

I would think that anybody who wanted to leave would have his case looked at fairly favorably by whatever committee reviews this stuff.

Not given the grand-jury testimony, no.

Imagine if Penn State advances to the Big Ten Championship game, wins that, and advances to the Rose Bowl. Hell of a parade they'll be throwing for Joe in Pasadena.

It was more like "We Ahhhhhhhh...Penn State." Someone should ask Joe how he's lived in a central Pa cornfield for 60 years yet still has the cartoonish accent of a Mulberry Street Mafioso.

Agreed. The athletic communicatons side in many cases deals with higher-profile issues than the university side.

Paterno's issuing these statements without any approval from the BOT. That's what makes these stories really difficult from a PR standpoint. Everybody's going rogue. I'm just shocked that the BOT has not had a press conference. How can they not try to put some face of reason on this thing?

If things are going to carry on with the status quo in charge, I would hope that some players are observing what is going on and thinking about not playing on Saturday.

Paterno is a doddering old man who doesn't understand what's happening and can't effectively communicate. EXCEPT he continues to make clear to everyone involved what he wants and what he thinks when it suits him. Can't have it both ways.

I'm not going to blame any player who plays, but any player who pulled out would earn a tremendous amount of respect.

    It's really unbelievable.

I appreciate the contrition in this statement, I really do.

But, he doesn't get to draw the line, not now. He doesn't get to tell the Board how they should be spending their time.

If he wants to make it easy for everyone, if he wants the program to have a chance at restoring its dignity, he resigns right now.

Allowing him to do that is more than he deserves.

Yup. And the contrition should have been shown Saturday when the report. Actually, it should have been shown nine years ago, 15 years ago.

I would be shocked if any of these players had an opinion one way or the other. They are trained football specialists and have been since they were 10 years old, and their collective knowledge of the world outside football would fit inside a mouthpiece. This is not unique to Penn State, it is every Division I program with the possible exception of truly lofty academic places like Stanford and Rice.

Regardless of Joe Pa's retiring, regardless of whoever else goes, there are two things I can't get around.

How could they let him go when they knew what was going on in the late 90s, and how could they let him back on campus after this incident? I don't understand. Who knows what else happened on that campus?
