Penn State AD charged with perjury -- *UPDATE 2* Sandusky Arrested Again

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by linotype, Nov 5, 2011.

  1. Re: Penn State AD charged with perjury in Sandusky investigation

    Paterno didn't see it. A grad-assitant did.

Why didn't the GA go to the cops? Huh? He witnessed it first-hand and did nothing? WTF?
Where is the outrage there ... Isn't that almost as bad as David Cash, the Bad Samaritan?
Again, Paterno's info was second-hand.. The grad-assistant - in his mid-20's - failed to directly intervene?
But Paterno's the guy you all want to throw to the wolves?

  2. Re: Penn State AD charged with perjury in Sandusky investigation

Support for the football program aside, what does it take for somebody to do the right thing? They can hide behind semantics and "Oh, but I reported it to my boss" excuses, but the sad truth is they had no problem with allow the continued rape of children if speaking out against it might damage the football program.

What is the line these people would not cross? Would they be willing to go out and encourage other children to attend Sandusky's perverted fantasy camp? Would they continue to look the other way if their own kids were victims?

At what point does a human being say "Enough of this" and step in to protect a child?

Re Paterno, the fact that this was the second batch of allegations to come to light about Sandusky removes any of the scant doubt about what he should have done -- morally I'm saying, who gives a crap about legally here. The fact that neither he nor anyone else made any effort to find out who the young kid was or whether he was OK, that's damn-them-to-hell territory if they are Catholic priests.

As an educator, you tell your boss and you make sure he tells social services.

That is the link. Was social services contacted in all of this? They do the investigation and then they contact the police.

A Penn State fan site but one that is pretty blunt in its assessment:

    The charge is buggery.

    The university is . . .

Due process? Oh, yes. For sure. Let's get on with it.

But no roadblocks or hindrances should be thrown in the way of due process, and the apologists need to recognize and remember that.

    Full speed ahead.

We'll disagree, but for one day (again, referring to Joe's presser day), I think you can put the games aside. The readers who want to turn their attention only to the next game are Fanbois of the highest order, and if they're still with the paper, they'll be around later in the week.

I don't take that approach too often, but this sure looks like the biggest college sports scandal of my lifetime.

You can't spend 50 years insisting the mortar of your program is virtue and integrity, then fall back on semantics ("I did what was required of me") during the ultimate test of your character. As a coach, a leader, and as a man, Joe Paterno failed miserably during this episode. What the price for that failure should be, I can't say. But arguing otherwise, that he did not fail, and fail enormously, suggests you have lost perspective on a massive scale.

playthrough, covering up a murder is a pretty big scandal, too. This is on par with Baylor.

    Yep . . . we're way past the paying-players-who-us? intersection, here.

Graduate Assistant: Excuse me Coach, do you have a minute?

    Paterno: Sure, what's up?

Graduate Assistant: Well, I'm not sure how to say this, but Coach Sandusky is raping a young boy in the showers.

Paterno: Wow. That's some crazy shit. Well, son, you did the right thing in coming to me. I'll handle this from here. No reason for you to further involve yourself, I'm on it.

In fact, first thing tomorrow morning, I'm going to write a memo to AD Curley. That should take care of it.
