From what I understand, the two have been quite distant ever since 98, when the first investigation happened and Paterno told him he'd never be the Penn State head coach, didn't socialize, barely ever even talked to each other; and it was mostly a professional working relationship before that--not an off field friendship.

A lot of people have been throwing around statements about how they were "good buddies, old pals, etc.", but it doesn't sound like that was necessarily the case.

    Where was Jerry's charity based?

I'm guessing in a picture perfect, college town like State College, there probably weren't a lot of "disadvantaged youth."

So, was his "charity work" always in areas like the one where he volunteered?

The Second Mile was started in State College. It now has seven chapters. Among the office sites are King of Prussia (suburban Philadelphia), Camp Hill (suburban Harrisburg).

Found the opening statment to be interesting reading.

Could you link that NYT story please? Everything I've seen, including the GJ presentment that people keep telling me to read, does not say that at all. It looks like a lot of you have filled in the holes with the worst-case possibilities and then treated that as fact.

But this is just fanboy obfuscation.

The grand jury report clearly states that Paterno's own testimony admits he knew of *at least* "Fondling and inappropriate sexual contact."

So in order to argue that maybe Paterno didn't know enough to be condemned for his inaction, you'd have to argue that "fondling or inappropriate sexual contact" with a 10-year-old isn't really that bad. Do you feel good about arguing that?

Yes, please. Ridicule the poster instead of dealing with the facts. Az told me, ""Victim 2," pp. 6 -7." Read it. Show me where Paterno was told anything more than an allegation of some kind of activity. The same allegations that all those other people I've mentioned have also heard for years.

Anyone surprised that State's Attorney is yet to investigate Second Mile? Penn State reported the 2002 incident to the guy in charge. Also, it seems that reporting statue covers students only. Headed for Duke Lax like mess. Chief of Police failed to mention that there were multiple failed investigations of Sandusky while berating the school officials.

    No, he doesn't.

The bare minimum based on the undisputed facts says that Paterno knew about "fondling or inappropriate sexual contact" or whatever.

It seems pretty likely to me that he knew more than that, but if someone wants to argue about that, that's fine.

But even the minimum that Paterno knew, even taking the undisputed facts in the best possible light for him, is still enough for him to be morally guilty of what he's being accused of: Insufficient action to protect children from a sexual predator.

TeamBud is essentially saying that because we don't know if he's culpable of inaction or active cover-up, we shouldn't condemn him for his inaction because the details are still fuzzy. The fuzziness is inside a range of possibilities that all leave Paterno worthy of all the condemnation he's received.

I can do both at the same time, don't worry.

Rick just said it, but Paterno himself ADMITS TO knowing of "fondling or something of a sexual nature." Even if you keep the blinders on about everything else and continue to live in your utopian Happy Valley world where that one instance is the only thing Joe Paterno ever knew about this case, even if it's that way, his fault is unambiguous here.

I ridicule you because after 93 pages, it has become clear that that is all the consideration you deserve. I really hope you're a current student and not the grown-up you have told us you are, because it would be a terribly sad thing to see someone who has actually experienced life to some degree holding on to these delusions at a time when he's supposed to be a functioning member of society.
