You have an order of magnitude more.

If "tell him what he saw" didn't really mean that being the biggest one.

That thought process alone -- and it is a correct thought process -- should be enough to dismiss the notion that McQueary should have dove in there, fists swinging.

Mike McQueary is guilty of the same thing Paterno is guilty of: a failure to follow up.

If he had done the right thing - break that rape up, go straight to the police - Penn State football would have been up in flames in a week, and he would have been a pariah in Happy Valley - never get a job near Penn State - or probably in football - ever again.

He didn't do the right thing... but the right thing would have negatively altered his life forever.

Maybe I can start a charity to supply them with coffee.

It's not particularly hard to do the right thing when it's also in your self-interest.

But again, Rick, you're talking about split-seconds here to form your response. Just think his was fairly natural.

Funny thing is McQueary DID have the courage to do that when he was breaking up a knife fight between large athletic men.

Which I agree might underscore Double Down's posts about how football culture can warp these guys. With the knife fight, the potential consequence was being stabbed. With the shower incident, the potential consequence was wrecking an entire program that was worshipped in that state, and famous men of authority that he'd been taught to revere. For a kid raised in Penn State football culture, consequences No. 2 probably seemed more frightening.

Of course the other obvious difference is the "state of shock" factor. I'm sure a guy like McQueary has seen plenty of fights between men in his life, he was mentally and emotionally prepared to handle that situation. But I'm sure never in a million years could he've imagined ever seeing the sight he stumbled onto in those showers in 02.

It's easy to label McQueary a despicable coward, and he undisputably was a coward on that day. And we're all convinced we would've reacted completely differently. But nobody really knows unless they've actually faced the situation.

Of all the non-heroes in this mess, I understand what McQuery did the easiest.

It wasn't Profiles in Courage, but I get what he did. His chickens have come home to roost 9 years later. At least if he'd been a pariah in 2002, he'd have the moral high ground.

Crawl on ESPN: Penn State players want McQueary with them on Saturday.

Just to add context to the "knife incident": http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2008/04/08/bell_off_team_after_alleged_kn.aspx

They probably want Paterno with them, too.

In this case, they don't get to make the call.

Sorry, got confused. I was talking about his decision to pass the buck to Paterno after the fact.

In the heat of the movement? I'm probably just calling the cops for the same reason Dick stated. Who knows what a guy like that do to keep a secret, and I've got my own kid to go home to. If that makes me a despicable coward, well, I've been called worse.

I want more money, my old dog to stop pissing on the carpet and my wife to stop breaking things.

    What does everyone else want?

Sorry, players, but it's not your call.
