"They really wouldn't give a reason. They're linking the football program to the scandal and, possibly, the cover up. That's very disturbing to me."

Outing alert: TeamBud is Franco Harris.

We've litigated this to no end around here the last 72-hours, but what the hell:

"It's not unreasonable to believe, however, that McQueary never fathomed being in such a circumstance. Further, as described there was no lead-up to the discovery; he stumbled across a scene that he wasn't remotely prepared for."

McQueary was a 28-year-old man, seeing another man rape a child. Fortunately, no one is prepared for that kind of a discovery, but it's only human nature to think that a grown man would instinctually come to the rescue of a child. And if that man doesn't, and then later doesn't attempt to do more than tell his boss about what he saw, then that man is, plain and simply, a coward. And if he's not a criminal, than the laws need to be re-written.

That's an awesome story. Perfect for Veteran's Day.

And, don't get me wrong, I'm a critic of McQueary.

But, I think there are a couple of big differences. You were trained for this, and you were trying to get your own guys out of harm.

McQueary was trained to always protect the program. And, it was one of his own perpetrating the crime.

If McQueary saw one of his players getting mugged, he'd probably have jumped in. He would have helped his brother.

Sadly, he didn't look at that kid in the same way.

Not excusing it at all. It's horrible. Fucking horrible.

It's why every program across the country should be looking at what they are teaching their kids.

I think team sports teaches so many valuable lessons.

But, PSU football thought some terrible lessons. And they are likely not alone.

What three bags said. The very least McQueary could have done was call the police. There's no getting around that.

Amazing the number of people making idiots of themselves in all this.

Let me emphasize I was simply contrasting the preparedness of three_bags_full to that of McQueary in their respective moments of crisis. I have NO understanding of why, after some very brief period of time, McQueary didn't do more. As in, 10 or 15 seconds later he should have been back in that shower laying waste to one Sandusky.

First, echoing what TigerVols said to thank you for your service, tbf (and to remember those who didn't get to come back from wherever they served).

A quick question about the recent topic of this conversation: are we sure that when McQuerry saw Sandusky and the victim in the shower that the act continued? Here's the relevant bit from the Grand Jury Presentment:

"The graduate assistant was shocked but noticed that both Victim 2 and Sandusky saw him. The graduate assistant left immediately, distraught."

It says that McQuerry "immediately" left, but it doesn't say how Sandusky reacted once he saw McQuerry. Did he panic and leave immediately or continue with the act? If the act stopped immediately and Sandusky left with the kid, does that change things? Probably not - Sandusky and the victim would presumably have to get dressed and leave while McQuerry did nothing. Still, it's a minor point that's been bothering me since I read the GJP - what happened immediately after Sandusky saw McQuerry.

(Again, an admittedly minor point, and there's still little excuse for McQuerry's overall inaction immediately during the event of immediately thereafter, but one that bears bringing up.)

    Hypothesis:

This all turned on McQueary and Paterno quickly because everyone was in agreement that Sandusky was a cretin.

And we can't have 103 pages of blind agreement here.

I'm not saying that's all of it. I'm saying it speeded up the process.

Wait a minute. While we're on comparisons between soldiers and football players, why wouldn't McQueary's brain be wired that way, which is exactly the way a soldier's brain is wired? And the knife-fight incident proves his brain IS wired differently.

I hear people complain that "everyone is forgetting about the real bad guy here" when we focus on the other players (Paterno, McQuerry, the PSU administration). The reality is that we haven't forgotten about Sandusky - how could you? But there's really nothing to say about him - he's accused of committing unspeakable, horrific acts that churn the stomachs of the most jaded person. So instead, we focus on everyone else, where there is at least some level of ambiguity and debate about their culpability.
