I kind of apologize earlier for wondering about Paterno's culpability. Like I said, this story was such a shocker that I was just trying to get my head around it after reading the 23-page report, the news coverage, and the Pennsylvania laws.

Obviously, he should have called the police when nothing was getting done.

I feel like a humongous dumbass for even having to think on it for a second.

    Wow.

This press release couldn't be more f'ed up if Herman Cain had written it.

Reading between the lines, this is what I read:

"I was told something happened but he didn't tell me details and besides the guy he was talking about didn't work for me anymore anyway, so what's the big deal?

Oh, and this whole disgraceful thing muddies everyone ever involved with the University, including all you fans, but please don't let it get you down when you look in the mirror."

I clearly remember an interview from 4-5 years ago max, where Paterno was talking about just discovering Mash for the first time. Guess he never caught up to the "very special episode" of Diff'rent Strokes.

Why did the guy he was talking about no longer work for you?

    Did something happen earlier?

Like, oh...... in..... uhhh... Nineteen Ninety-Eight?

The statement was released by Joe's son, Scott, who apparently has a law degree, has run for Congress, and is a "republican strategist".

I imagine Scott wrote the statement.

Even Herman Cain must be laughing at how terribly they've handled this.

Reading futher, athletic department referring all media to univeristy relations. Or as Berman might say, "No one circles the wagons like Penn State."

One of the Networks said Penn State was in full "damage control" mode.

It might be true, but it's a terrible embarrassment that this is how they've handled it.

Paterno & Curley both testified before the Grand Jury. They've known about this investigation for a while now, and had to expect Sandusky to get indicted at the very least.

And, yet, they're response looks like they were blindsided by the whole affair.

Something this big isn't handled by the athletic communications office. That would be true at any university in America. It's SOP.

Rustling on twitter that there was a secret Board of Trustees meeting at something called "Old Main"

Pulling the wife into the statement was also horrible.

Does Pennsylvania have an Open Meetings Act?

One point that I haven't seen mentioned here. All of the assaults in this case appear to have occurred roughly between 1994 and 2009. Sandusky founded The Second Mile in....1977. Likely there were a lot more victims in the preceding 17 years.
