If you think that I believe the state as a whole is being wrapped up in too large a net, I'll cop to it. You're looking at it from the outside; I'm looking at it from the inside. Perhaps you can understand THAT end of it.

    And ... there's the troll.

The state as a whole? Your persecution complex knows no bounds.

    Not in this, it doesn't.

To come at this from a different angle: in what way is today's game "healing?"

There's a direct correlation between the "rally round the family" defensiveness that says that the state is being unfairly persecuted, and the same defensiveness that caused the football program to cover-up for a child rapist.

Maybe it's not. I don't have the energy to defend that particular part of it.

I'm truly sorry you've been so victimized in this ordeal. For your sake, I hope Penn State wins today. You deserve it.

As angry as this situation makes me, I don't have a dog in this fight, and I could argue either side of the cancel the game vs. don't cancel the game argument.

But, I guess I'll just say this, in agreement with Rick:

The problem here was institutional. It wasn't just Paterno, it was the entire football program that failed.

So, while I understand the need to have a few hours of distraction to get way from all of this, I'm not sure that distraction should be a Penn State football game.

106,000 fans cheering on the very institution at the heart of the problem doesn't really strike me as a few hours to forget about everything. In many ways, it reinforces everything that went wrong.

If the problems had been in the History Department, then maybe the football game would serve this role.

But, in this circumstance, not really.

The football program is still being celebrated. And there are still a multitude of problems to solve in that program.

Fuck, YGBFKM, I just want this game to be over, and this day, so we can regain some sense of normalcy.

That's the true extent of "me" in this.

What do we think of the acting President's "We are Penn State" ads?

Frankly, I was just going to mention that myself.

Exactly. You, and many other PSU fans, want badly to restore the status quo. No changes that might prevent the exact "keep it in the family" culture that created the problem. Because feeling normal is more important than getting it right.
