Looking back at the week that was, I feel like perhaps one of the single biggest fuck-ups, and what partly led to the shitstorm that this has become, was the football SID's terse press release that Paterno and the players were only going to answer questions about the Nebraska game and "the college football season." That just showed everyone that Penn State absolutely did not get it, and it all snowballed from there. Total fucking amateur hour by that media relations department.

There were a good three days of fuck-ups,

starting Sunday when Spanier pledged his "unconditional support" for Curley and Schultz, then it escalated when Paterno issued his "I didn't know nuddin'" statement, which stated that McQueary came to his house on a Saturday during the off-season, visibly upset, but never stated specifically what he witnessed.

Then came the, "JoePa will only take football/ballwasher questions," statement, which was subsequently followed by canceling the fucker 40 minutes before it was to begin.

You look at these events and think maybe, if they were handled better by the Penn State Department of Special Education and Public Relations, the shitstorm may have been less severe. However, I wonder how much of living in a bubble and having the "We can control this because we're Penn State and we've ALWAYS controlled this," mindset played into those decisions being made.

    A lot.

Like someone said earlier, this was just another media/outsider "distraction" that the football team had to block out.

Lost in all of this is that Nebraska isn't exactly a squeaky-clean program either. Wonder if Christian Peter watched this week thinking, "Jesus, at least the people I raped were of age."

Pro-tip for college football on-air talent: Time to retire the hackneyed phrase "they do all the little things" when speaking about Penn State... for a while at least.

Kind of interesting that now-fired PSU president Graham Spanier was the Nebraska chancellor back in the days when Christian Peter ran amok.

Also kind of interesting: Spanier has a PhD in sociology, is a marriage and family therapist and was an author of a study about mate swapping (swinging).
(I don't really have an issue with swinging if it involves consenting adults, just find his background, um, interesting.)

Another interesting take on the mess that some folks won't appreciate:

Geez, going back to Spanier for just a moment, there's also this:
Spanier's father survived the Holocaust, and a number of his relatives were killed in Nazi concentration camps. In a 1994 interview, Graham Spanier said his father, embittered by his experience in Germany, beat him and broke his nose so many times it couldn't be straightened.
