And we all know damn well that these coaches use negative tactics to recruit. They've been using the "That conference is gonna implode" line to lure away Big East recruits for years. This kinda negative recruiting sells itself.

I have worked with a few excellent young crime reporters. They're a different breed. They seem hungrier, and you can see it in every story they chase. I know I didn't have that kind of hunger.

I'm not sure if Moddy linked this or not, but Fenno wrote another great piece today, this one about some idiotic PSU fans who simply don't get it:

What the fuck is wrong with people?

If True, Paterno has no to blame but himself. He built the program and will end be the destroyer of the school.

He forgot rule 1, the football team is part of the University. The University is not part of the football team

Here's the best part: This guy was EASILY the easiet protestor in history to ignore.

I'm sure we've all been near a protest at least once in our lives. A lot of screaming usually. A lot of chanting usually. Sometimes a bullhorn. Many times being obnoxious. Acording to this story, this guy did NONE of that. He held up a big fuckin' sign. And some people got PISSED THE FUCK OFF because of what was on that sign. Know what I do when I see a sign/t-shirt slogan/bumper sticker that I don't like or agree with? I say to myself, "wow, this guy's an asshole," and I go on with my day. I don't throw beer at them, or call them an asshole, or get in a guy's face so violently that I have to be restrained.

But these people were so offended by that sign and how it reflected on Dear Old State that they couldn't resist the desire to react. And here's a question, the story addresses the people who reacted. How many others were in that crowd and wanted to do the same thing to this guy and either didn't have the courage or did have the common sense to not do it?

Canceling any of the games would have been beyond stupid. That said, watching the fans leave in utter silence after losing was fun for me.

At least Westboro didn't show up.

If it was actually "beyond stupid," Penn State would have done it.

Knowing what you know about that program NOW, and estimating with some degree of confidence what that program will be like in the very near future, how many of you would be comfortable sending your son to play football there next fall? Assuming they make a reasonable hire (i.e., completely disconnected with Penn State's past, etc.), I'd be fine with my son going there. In fact, in some ways I'd be even more comfortable. You want to talk about squeaky clean? Meet Penn State over the next few years.

That's what people said about Baylor basketball.

    Not so much.

Last I checked no Baylor basketball players have died in the past seven years.

It's easier to win fast/overcome stuff in basketball, IMO. You don't need nearly as many kids as you do to win in football.
