He's not necessarily dirty if the definition is breaking NCAA rules, but just about every coach in the country hates him because of the way he recruits. I've heard rumors that he sends out "information packets" about other schools that are usually full of lies, like if player's mom is concerned about academics then he'll say the other schools recruiting him have a zero-percent graduation rate.

Is 117 pages in 8 days some kind of SJ record?

She didn't say that. She said, "It's not a football story. It's a crime story."

If I'm an editor and my beat writer says, "Let the crime reporters handle the story, I've got a Nebraska advance to write," I'm looking for a new beat writer.

We've had Penn State sycophants call and email us and claim we and other media in the south were so quick to jump on Ohio State and Penn State but said we sweep "the cesspool that is southern football" under the rug.
I challenged to google Cam Newton and Auburn, Urban Meyer and the Gators arrest record on his watch, FSU and academic fraud, Miami and Nevin Campbell, North Carolina with academic fraud AND agent dealings, the various law-breaking involving LSU and Georgia players .... and on and on. I then told him to ask the football coach, AD, president or anyone in the fan base of a southern college and ask them if they believe their media has gone easy on them.
Haven't heard back. Doubt if I will.

Among the sport's great ironies is that two of the three major-league programs that have NEVER been nailed for recruiting violations (Stan/BC/NU), BC and NU are the homes of two of the most notorious pointshaving scandals of recent decades.

This whole scandal reminds me of the overriding point of "The Wire," about the inherent corruptability of American institutions.

Has anyone written that the game shouldn't have been played? It seems like a lot of columnists, including Doyel, got swept up in the pregame prayer, etc., etc., "healing" storyline.

Oh, my God. Someone was selling, "What Happens in Happy Valley Stays in Happy Valley" T-shirts.

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/college/ct-spt-1113-haugh-penn-state-scandal--20111113,0,840283.column

Perhaps those shirts were making fun of Penn State rather than supporting the cover-up?

Haugh's column paints a very, very ugly picture of what went on there yesterday.

No way that the game should have been played. None. It is a travesty that it was.
