Why would Paterno not have thrown Sandusky down the elevator shaft in 1998, or certainly in 2002?

What could Sandusky possibly have used as leverage to prevent Paterno from doing so?

Whitlock joins the chorus in demanding Paterno's resignation:

He wasn't "only" your everyday D-coordinator--he was there for three decades, he was the guy in charge of their defenses when they won their national championships, he was the guy in charge of the linebackers when the school earned the Linebacker U reputation, and he was guy who'd built up enormous clout and position in the Penn State community.

If it'd been some random new guy they probably would've resolved it by feeding him to the police. They could've done that with little to no damage to Penn State. But it's a different story when it's somebody as inextricably linked to Penn St. football history as Sandusky. So instead they covered up to protect their own interests. Paterno to protect his legacy, he didn't want the world knowing the guy he had running his defenses during his glory years was a child rapist. Administrators to protect the Uni's most lucrative asset--it's the football program.

It was going to be damaging to Penn State whenever and however it came out. But if Paterno and the PSU administration could make some credible case that as soon as they were faced with any substantial evidence Sandusky was doing this stuff, they immediately forcibly and decisively removed him from association with the football program, AND fed him to the cops, they might be able to get this "we were deceived by a sick individual" stuff to fly.

    They didn't and they can't.

I don't think the press conference was completely worthless. At the end, someone asked if there could be culpability for Paterno and the grad assistant because they saw Sandusky with a kid at practice in 2007 and it was said that was something that could be looked into. Also, a lot of reading between the lines on the moral/ethical guidelines compared to the legal one.

NYT story today carried a small, but interesting fact that I hadn't read anywhere else. Sandusky is married. I don't know if it's relevant to the story (obviously the NYT thought it was relevant; thus, it was in the story), but now we know.

Can someone closer to the program discuss the district attorney who had investigated Sandusky who went missing in 2005? I've read bits and pieces about it but I can't seem to get my arms around it.

    Six adopted children, right?

    Were they formerly foster kids?

Right. He and his wife, it is said, could not have children, so they adopted and were foster parents to others.

Wait, the DA who originally looked into this disappeared? Was he/she ever found?
