Joe Pa was informed of the allegations. It's not good enough that he only went to the AD. He had a legal and moral obligation to make sure the authorities were informed. Not only should Joe Pa resign, he should be indicted.

No question about the moral obligation but if a state employee followed state rules for reporting sexual abuse/harassment at a state institution, can the state indict him?

Not trying to be a smart ass and I sure as shit am not absolving him but moral obligation and the law aren't the same thing.

The state official said today that JoePa fulfilled his obligation in the eyes of the law.

    God may disagree, however.

I have never like Penn State in my dealings with them -- the wall they build around the program and the veneration of the head coach.

I guess we see why they had such policies and why such policies are bad for everyone in the long run.

State Police Commish says JoePa not a target "at this point." The investigation is still active and ongoing, and Pennsylvania authorities are looking for more potential victims. They are asking people to come forward. Paterno better have been very careful about what he said.

The way this has engulfed the whole state, I am very curious to see what the atmosphere is Saturday. The only thing even remotely like this that I can remember is when Bonds was going for the HR record and SF fans just took the "fuck it, he's our guy" attitude. I say remotely as in, that was maybe within one one-millionth of the gravity of this one. But ultimately that was just fan bases trash-talking each other over something that was of questionable importance, right?

This is ... I mean, I don't know how anyone who considers himself a decent person can stand and cheer for a program that did this.

If I had to guess, I see a rousing ovation for JoePa and the Lions when they take the field.

I would suspect that there will be a large Penn State contingent rooting for the Nittany Lions on Saturday against Nebraska, mainly because there are people out there who are not so small-minded as to link Silas Redd, Devon Still and other 18- to 20-year-olds with the horrific things that have happened here.

Of course, there are other people who are so small-minded.

Sorry, but the institution itself is on trial here. Sucks for the players, sure, but you aren't cheering for Silas Redd coming out of the tunnel, you're cheering for Joe Paterno, and you're cheering for the university president who a couple of days ago lauded the now-indicted officials for "the highest levels of honesty, integrity and compassion." You're cheering that.

When ESPN.com finally got around to addressing this, they did it pretty well with a column from PSU alum Dana O'Neil about how empty "Penn State Proud" sounds now.

    No.

They will be cheering for Silas Redd coming out of the tunnel.

    Otherwise, they will be booing.

Sucks for the players, huh? That's got to rank with the most blatant "easy for you to say" remarks ever uttered here.

People who give JoePa a standing ovation on Saturday -- and I agree, that's exactly what will happen -- are truly brainwashed. And it's proof that there is literally nothing so depraved it could cause certain fanbases to turn against the legends they spent a lifetime creating.
