I think you meant to vote "Yes," BYM2 - they (we) still think he did enough.

It's a tricky question. With hindsight - knowing that there are more reported incidents and knowing the results of the Grand Jury and knowing that the ball would be dropped in 2002 - it's easy to say that Paterno should have done more. But at the time, his actions should have been sufficient. He reported it to enough people so that the AD, President, and VP in charge of the police knew it and Sandusky's employers knew it. That should have been enough. Sadly, it wasn't. Claiming that he should have known at the time that it wasn't enough is disingenuous.

All that's with the usual caveat - if it turns out Paterno directed or knew about a coverup, then he's obviously at fault.

The University was warned in 1998. The story broke over the weekend and is buried upthread somewhere.

Yeah, saw that. And an investigation was started and dropped. Four years later, there is another accusation. Would you treat him as guilty at that point or report it and let the authorities determine if he's guilty?

Yet somehow Paterno still allowed Sandusky to use the team facilities among other things.

I know Paterno was low on the totem pole and did not have much power at Penn State. So I must agree there isn’t anything else he could have done. Just a lowly state employee.

Sandusky - still young and healthy - "retired" in 1999. Coincidence?

C'mon. And they let him continue to use University facilities?

He's a man accused of something terrible. He's also a respected member of the community and the head of a charity that helps young people. You would want to be careful before throwing someone like that under the bus. Report it and let the investigators find out.

The head of a charity that helps young kids? It gets better each time. You mean his brothel?

Bottom line, Paterno knew he had a suspected pedophile hanging around and yet on the second accusation in which he had first hand knowledge of, does nothing but report it to his "superiors", even though he is the most powerful man in the University.

You also have to be naive as all hell to believe that there were other rumors that Penn State and Paterno hadn't heard. There is no reason at all to let this man be around your team and your facilities, none.

This is where PSU -- and while we're at it, the Catholic Church -- went WAYYY wrong from the get-go in this case (and others like it).

The thing is, this crime is so horrible and repulsive, pretty much universally reviled by society, that whenever you get anything resembling a credible accusation of actions such as these, an institution charged with the guidance and protection must immediately leap into a position of VERY AGGRESSIVE INVESTIGATION.

And the suspect should be treated not as if he **IS** guilty (not Starman Justice), but as if he **MAY BE** guilty.

That is, immediately and decisively removed from any and all interactions from potential victims until a complete and VERY AGGRESSIVE investigation can be completed.

If, after that investigation is completed, no evidence emerges that the alleged crimes in fact did take place, then announce he has been cleared and life goes on.

But if evidence comes out the crimes DID take place, then it's Shawshank time.

Nope, especially seeing the problem was not limited to just one of Rupert's rags.

Don't know if anyone read this piece on one of Sandusky's adopted kids ... ran in yesterday's Patriot-News. Lots of red flags here, and more good reporting from Sara Ganim.
