    Second Mile looking to dissolve.

(sorry if this was posted elsewhere, just saw it on ESPN.com and this was the first thread of which I thought.)

Let's see if that opinion changes when all of that secret file stuff becomes public.

    Yeah.

Simply on indisputable current evidence it appears preposterous to believe Paterno was not aware of Sandusky's activities in 1999 at the absolute earliest.

Frankly there is a strong suspicion he was likely aware long long before that.

So Paterno allowed Sandusky to roam free, cultivating additional victims, wandering in and out of the football building where Paterno was an absolute god, for 12 more years before anything significant was done.

OK, Mike. How many child molesters do you allow to wander freely in and out of your basketball facilities (and keep an office on the premises)?

Did you not see their ticket sales?

Do you not see how the fans still love football?

Careful, Starman. You don't want to upset the Wal-Mart Nittany Lions with crazy talk about their God being fallible.

The only defense really is that Paterno was so senile/oblivious/naive/befuddled he had no earthly clue what was going on, yet we were assured constantly for the past 20 years or so that he was still sharp, alert, with-it, both hands on the wheel, etc etc etc.

I think the truth is closer to the former rather than the latter.

i've said this before - and it certainly doesn't absolve him of responsibility - but I also think the fact he came from one of the last generations to be taught you just didn't "talk about certain things in polite company" played a role in his actions as well.

That said, some folks need to go away for a long time for covering this up.

My dad was born within a couple of years of Paterno, and he knew what sexual predators were and he knew what to do about them. He wouldn't have stood by befuddled wringing his hands.

The broad denial among the Twitter universe's True Believers is saddening.

What's more important . . . the near/intermediate future of the football program, or this brace of abused kids?

    You know the answer.

Too many more suits probably coming, as well as criminal trials for several officials. So as much as we may want it to go away, I sort of doubt it will.

The university is trying to reach out to victims and offer settlements to prevent them from suing. Better to pay up 50k than 500k, I suppose. I bet we see victims come out of the woodwork, claiming stuff from 15-20 years ago. Who's going to dispute them?

As for Paterno, I suspect he knew SOMETHING at some point. Maybe not everything. Maybe not from the beginning. But he's between a rock and a hard place. If he fires Sandusky or rats on him, does he escape as well and come off looking like a good guy? Or does he go down in flames with Sandusky?

My guess is he chose to turn a blind eye in hopes it would somehow go away.

Who's in the mood to read another book about Paterno's life?
