Can't let one of the best/most faithful and profitable fans bases in the NCAA realm wither and starve.

Pretty much. Meanwhile, sanctions will remain because they don't travel to bowl games nearly as well.

  3. Bump ....

Internal NCAA emails reveal they were "bluffing" PSU into sanctions, betting the school would be too embarrassed to do anything.

How bad does the NCAA suck? They made the fugazi victims into actual victims. Now I predict 409 will be restored.

Crissakes, the NCAA should just disband. Now.

I said at the time the NCAA was opening a massive can of worms with the punishment. When you make shit up as you go along it always comes back to bite you in the ass. Emmert made Penn State into a victim. That should be the final nail in his coffin.

How much more corrupt can the NCAA get?

Some damn telling emails dug up there. So the NCAA basically knew at the time that the Penn State thing was outside it's jurisdiction but decided to bully its way in anyways. That 60 million dollar fine feels a lot like flat out extortion.

Funny thing is the NCAA will jump into something like Penn State, which seems to involve matters way outside the scope of its intended authority, yet in this North Carolina scandal, which logically seems right in the NCAA's wheelhouse, it for some time tried to deflect it as essentially outside jurisdiction based on the laughably tenuous "purely academic and not athletic" grounds. Hard to respect any enforcement organization when you can't find consistent or logical rhyme and reason to how they make decisions.

If you'll scroll back through this thread you'll find dozens of posts and posters screaming that the NCAA had to do SOMETHING!!!!1!!!! whether they had the jurisdiction or not. "Lack of Institutional Control" was term most people pointed to. This was also the public and media drumbeat at the time. The folks at the NCAA weren't smart enough to ignore that screeching and they're paying for it now.

Of course there were a few here who saw through that reasoning from the very beginning of this discussion. For example:

Not that I'm the type to toot his own horn or anything....

Anybody who posted things like that back then were run off by the likes of Bubbler, Tom Petty and the other "my outrage is bigger than your outrage" posters.

I believe I was one of those who clamored for the NCAA to do something back then because of just how heinous the whole situation was and is still. Given just how much the program, university and town drank of the Kool-aid, some people going to jail was not going to change that so many around Penn St. were willing to white wash anything the program did. The program needed to be taken down a notch.

That said, the NCAA found the one way to make a tragic situation even worse and has now clouded a decision that was justifiable even if it was overreaching. Between the making billions off the athletes without kicking down some of that money, the shitting its pants over Manziel and Winston and now this, the NCAA needs to be overhauled. I can see why Penn St. didn't get the death penalty two years ago. This extortion probably would have come to light much sooner than it did.
