If Paterno is this insistent on talking to the press, it's not because he wants to admit making mistakes and to beg for forgiveness.

He'll proclaim his complete innocence in the matter. He'll state that he met his legal obligations in the matter and at most will say he was fooled by Sandusky.

And, he'll look worse for doing so.

That's right, they're "haters." They're not people who saw through this bullshit cloud of "Joe does things the right way" decades ago and were shouted down anytime it was brought up. They're "haters." They're not people who heard things, and heard of things and maybe even saw things that proved that Camelot may have just in fact been as Cabrini Green as every other college football program, but were shouted down by the sycophants for years. They're 'haters."

One of the worst phrases to come in the past five years is "Haters gotta hate," because usually that phrase is launched at someone who is offering legitimate concerns or constructive criticism. It's the 21st century way of saying, "Although your criticisms are valid it's easier for me to attack on you rather than look in at me."

At the end of the day, I think we'll all learn that Joe Paterno was a brilliant and cunning coach who built college football's version of the Mafia, where you take care of everything within the family and you never involve outsiders. It's the only possible explanation for McQueary witnessing what he witnessed and calling Joe and not CYS or the police.

I was really hoping for a flak-free, non-sterile press conference. Would have been refreshing, no matter what he said.

Scott Paterno, who obviously has never done anything in his life that didn't derive from his birthright, is really making life more difficult for his dad here. No surprise, I guess, that he would be such a fuckwit.

Damn, I was looking forward to hearing his breakdown of Nebraska's offense.

Oh, Jesus, Rick, give it a fucking break.

People can disagree on things without getting "fanboi" attached to them. I would think you, and Mr. Havercamp, and DD, would be smarter than that.

If you don't think this craters the program, you're crazy.

Above and beyond wiping out the coaching staff, how much pride is a 4- or 5-star recruit going to have putting on a Penn State t-shirt and walking into his high school math class right now?

Oh, and I'm sure the donors are going to feel great writing a check. Hope they have fun in the "memo" line.

And it's just a big ol' coincidence that the only people I have seen come remotely close to agreeing with the opinions being presented are Penn State fans. Fanboi-ism is real.

Just as having laid in ambush for years to pounce on Paterno's "Saint Joe" image is real. There's a lot of that going on here, too. Just saying, six of one, half-dozen of the other.

Do I think he should be fired? Yup. But don't be so high and mighty as to think there isn't something else behind a lot of the hate in this thread.

I thought "haters gonna hate" was reserved for perky TV sports reporters from Rhode Island.
