    I suppose that's a case-by-case thing, shotty.

While he isn't about to make a trip to Happy Valley and burn his diploma, my father, a 1972 PSU grad, is absolutely embarrassed to be one today. He told me over the phone a few hours ago that he's "not telling anyone I went to Penn State."

My advice to these fans? It's just a fucking game played by college kids. That's all it is. At some point in your life, grow up and gain a little perspective. A serial molester was given free run of the campus for years, and nobody at the school would call the cops because it might upset the football program's apple cart.

Good lord, don't these fans have children? How would they feel if they sent their kid off to a Sandusky camp and something horrific happened? Even worse, how would they feel if the people in positions of power ignored them and wished it all away?

then those people might wanna' gain some perspective on what's really important in life, and that goes the SEC psychos as well.

Jesus Christ, it's just a football team. I understood it when Catholics couldn't bear to grasp that everything they were told as children, that these Priests and Bishops were to be respected and appreciated, turned out to be BS when many of them turned out to be sexual predators and cover-up artists.

But this? This isn't a religion. This is Saturday entertainment, yet these people treat it like High Mass. It's not; just a buncha' 19 and 20 year olds throwing around a piece of leather.

The fact that many are rallying around a football coach instead of demanding answers shows there are a lot of people with warped priorities, many of them middle-aged adults who desperately need to grow-the-fuck-up.

It's just a game. If you've been treating it as more than that then it's you with the problem.

McCallum reflects on his 1999 SI profile of Sandusky.

Don't know about the white-out. Too far away to attend.

Sorry I lost you in my questions. All I'm asking is do you think there is enough proof of Paterno's involvement to run a story saying those things? Would it be allowed to run given the proof we've seen or would it be pulled to avoid a libel charge? All I've seen in the GJ report is that Paterno was told about something and he forwarded it to be investigated. I don't know what the GA told him or how believable it sounded or if he used a lot of "it looked like..." or "maybe..." so that it could've turned out to be nothing. I'm hoping to find out.

Do you understand now? Just an argument about the level of proof needed to believe something.

Right now the chairmen of all the bowl committees are saying the same prayer every night: Anyone but Penn State.

I think people would take the advice a lot more readily if you had been clearly shouting it, say, last Thursday night.

No argument with what you wrote, but to many people, this is their religion. Services are on Saturday afternoon instead of Sunday.

And my argument is that you don't get to tell people what should be important to them. Not your right.

Hey, this works so well, I wish I had thought of it a while back!

I'm not angry at the school - I'm angry at whoever participated in the coverup and allowed a serial child rapist to be there. My only argument is with finding out who those people are before we just say "Fire everybody!" From the GJ report, the GA obviously knew and it sounds like Curley and Schultz did too. Before throwing Paterno and Spanier on that heap, I'd like to make sure they belong there.

If it's them plus ten or twenty others? Yes, fire them all! Just make sure you're not wrecking a few more families for nothing.

Piotr: I don't think shotty's saying that at all. He and I have had our differences, but there is a segment of this world, mostly non-journalists, who so closely identify themselves with a team and their fandom that stepping outside of that is hard for them. Should it be? No. But it is.

shotty: I think we all know plenty of fans who need to grow the fuck up. :D
