Agreed, McQueary was a QB trained in making quick decisions. The call came and he threw an interception.
If he dialed 911 Paterno would have been off the hook unless they knew something in 1999.

The comparisions to the the way the Catholic Church handled things are apt.

I've never been in a locker room where you could look into the showers from more than 3-4 feet away.

They're designed to give you a little privacy. If he saw what was happening, he was close.

    It was 9.5 years ago.

Surely 75-year-old Joe was more capable of communicating what happened than 84-year-old Joe.

You are making WAY too many assumptions! After McQueary told Paterno, Sandusky was barred from bringing kids to the football building.

    Think about this, folks.

Somebody had to TELL Sandusky he couldn't bring kids around anymore, and don't you think he wondered why? Don't you think he KNEW why? He knew he was caught. AND YET... HE CONTINUED to abuse kids. This is Enabling Felonies 101.

Regarding McQueary, as the mother of one of the victims put it: A grown man saw a boy being sodimized, and he called his daddy.

McQueary is chickenshit, and he directly contributed to the abuse of new victims. That's on him for the rest of his life.

I'm just not very interested in reading about how tough this has been for McQueary:

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/bigten/story/2011-11-08/penn-state-scandal-mike-mcquery/51129742/1

I'm sure it is tough, but he's not the victim.

They've never even identified the boy who McQueary saw being abused by Sandusky. That kid likely never got any help.

He's the victim. All of those kids are victims. Save your tears for them.

Interesting take, and I think it makes sense based on what I've seen of Paterno's press conferences in recent years. Although this happened in 2002, I'm sure Paterno's faculties and communication skills were in better shape back then.

A solid theory to consider, though. Everyone here's been assuming some nefarious ego-driven coverup by him, but perhaps, due to age decline and life in the bubble, this had more to do with a doddering old man simply being incapable of fully grasping and handling something of this magnitude.
