Pretty much my thoughts exactly. I don't care for Paterno or PSU one way or the other, but a lot of the outrage at Paterno seems a little premature at this point.

Apprently he was out on a recruiting trip this week when this was all coming down. I'm sure those visits went well.....

Yup. And if he coaches on Saturday (and beyond) that image of people cheering on a man who could have saved these kids, but didn't, will stick to the school for decades. I'm truly baffled (and sickened) that he might get to coach out the season. People who roar in appreciation for him on Saturday will be destroying the school's reputation nationally. It's a true shame they can't see that.

Penn State still has road games this year at Ohio State and Wisconsin, about the two rowdiest fan bases anywhere outside of SEC country. Can you imagine the greeting Buckeye and Badger fans will give him?

I truly don't get the reasoning behind him finishing the season. It's only gonna prolongue the ugly circus, and it's not like his coaching is indispensible--he's basically just been a pressbox sitting figurehead for years anyways. Do they think he's gonna get farewell to the retiring coach treatment? Umm, no, it's gonna be U.G.L.Y.

I'm not even going to go that far. I think the outrage at Paterno is about right.

My problem is the current players being ostracized for it. If that makes me a fanboi, well ...

Also, I find the combination of the outrage by some posters coupled with trying to find the cutest way to state it to be ... a little insensitive.

That's possible. But it's also possible they bring in a big-name coach with no previous ties to the institution and clean house of the current football staff, just so they can say we're starting over with a clean slate. When next September rolls around, we might all be surprised how business-as-usual the atmosphere is. Who knows?

On the one hand, Penn State NEVER gets out from under this, because this is really something on the order of a 100-year scandal. On the other hand, Penn State is way more than its football program, and I think it'll still be Penn State -- with all/most of the concomitant glory -- unless the administration continues to botch this. That said, I think the administration has to fire Paterno. If the administration can't muster the guts to do so, then the administration has to be replaced. Penn State is past the point at which fairness to Paterno is even remotely a valid consideration.

As I said before, yes I read it. It doesn't say enough. If McQueary said he "might've seen fondling" or it "looked like something of a sexual nature," it's an accusation that needs to be investigated. McQueary might've been trying to keep the details from Paterno or was just too disgusted to say it. He might've just been asking how to report something like that. He might've been downplaying it so that he wasn't saying that he saw that and just walked away. I want to know before I say Paterno abetted a child rapist.

Somebody was asking about how remote State College is and if that had anything to do with why it was covered up.

I've visited a lot of I-A campuses and the only one I've been to that might be considered more remote is the University of Wyoming but Laramie is only two hours from Denver and it sits on a major interstate.

State College is 3.5 from Pittsburgh and at least two from Harrisburg and there are like two roads in and out of town. It's truly a world unto itself.

    He should be gone now.

If they wanted to give him one last send off, then maybe let him have this weekend at home. I wouldn't, but at least that will be a more controlled and supportive environment

But, to send him out on the road for two weeks and then maybe the Big Ten championship? That boys and girls, promises to be a three ring circus. I can only hope Game Day shows up....

These folks in State College really don't have a good grasp on what potentially lies ahead of them. And the additional institutional damage that it can cause being mocked, ridiculed, harrassed and serving as a national punchline for the better part of another month.

How can President Spanier survive the week or even the day? Amazing he has not also resigned. I can't imagine he won't be fired.
