They don't. But changing the rules of engagement midway through the process is going to bite the NCAA in the ass down the road.

Penn State needed to be punished but the folks in Indy & the NCAA BoD didn't think this one through.

I agree. The whole thing was rushed. Why? Public attention?

Even murder trials don't get done that fast.

It was rushed because football season was five weeks away and, should you let these clowns kickoff Sept 1 as if nothing happened you give the impression you aren't doing anything and aren't going to do anything.

They could have convened a trustee meeting in the time prior to The NCAA handing down the penalty.
Emert could have laid it out to the entire group instead of holding a gun to the President's head.
Acceptance within the entire PSU community would have been a lot greater.

I would assume that the NCAA felt that the PSU community's acceptance was of secondary/tertiary importance.

I would assume that too but still think that the NCAA execution could have been much better.

    Exactly.

And Boom, to hell with the Penn State community's acceptance. They should be ashamed enough of what happened at their school to shut the fuck up.

I get the feeling that's close to the heart of the matter. "You should be ashamed of yourself" From the president and Board of Trustees down to the janitor and the alums from the Class of 74. Even if the vast majority didn't do anything and had no idea what was going on. It's guilt by association.

If that's how the NCAA felt then they should have gone the DP route. Instead they decided on a plan that partially hinged on overall PSU community acceptance.
