I recently read the old cliche that (insert sports star) is "an even better person." I shook my head, not just because of the use of the tired phrase but also because it came from a national writer I respect.

The writer was referring to a professional athlete who is one of maybe the top 20-25 in his sport. That said, I don't think it's possible for him to be a better person than athlete. And even if it were, I don't believe a national writer who vaguely knows him would be able to make that assessment.

I've clearly thought about this too much.

Weeks of "news" reports and entire shows about Super Bowl commercials.

One of the few things I find more annoying than the 'discussion' of Super Bowl ads is the discussion of the halftime show.
Why is anyone discussing this? Cold Play, Bruce Springsteen, Metallica, Beyonce - what were the best halftime shows, what were the worst, Janet Jackson's breast ...
Enough already. It's a time filler; why does anyone give a sh#t?

Speaking of filler ... not sure which is worse, a "people watching the Super Bowl in a local sports bar" story or "hey, how 'bout that weather" story. Our fine publication had both today.

When print journalism is dead, no one will miss the Monday editions of the paper.

Everything about the delivery of news may change, but Sunday desk will stay the same.

Double spaces after periods, especially when it's that way in an entire story.

Isn't that an easy "find-and-replace" fix?

"God Bless America" during the seventh-inning stretch instead of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."
