I don't see anything in that story that indicates Long knew there was something going on between Petrino & Dorrell.

What I do see is an AD letting a coach hire who he wants to as quickly as possible. All that tells me is that Arkansas is no different than damn near any other athletic department in the country.

Anyone who thinks its unusual for unqualified people to be hired over qualified people in college athletics has probably never been around an athletic department.

A wild theory: I wonder if, by January or so, Petrino was trying to figure out a way to "get out" of his mess with Dorrell. He knew he was in too deep. He gives her the $20k (which would have been far better spent consulting me on the whole phone issue) and bumps her to the top of the football job. While it may appear that Petrino does this to bring Dorrell closer, I actually believe he does this to "keep her quiet". Hiring her was a panic move but I imagine Petrino was unable to pull himself away from her. Why? Look at her. That's why. That's why they were together before the motorcycle crash. He couldn't pull himself away.

Once they began a relationship, Dorrell then became the more powerful person. She had relatively little to lose and could take him down at any moment. That meant the relationship then moved to her terms. Petrino had to fear this.

Or do you mean he knew Petrino was banging her before he pushed her into the football gig?

It seems obvious he was looking the other way in terms of behavior (including her hiring with the football team) as long as they were winning, until he lost control of the motorcycle and he had to do something.

What I expect they'll do is say that due to her prior relationship with Petrino they are re-opening the search and she is free to reapply for the position.
