Not to mention some of the men.

In his defense, I don't think freq was limiting his side of the ledger to just the material things he provided.

I think he just wanted to make sure he included the fact that he was a good provider.

Now, maybe he's a dick at home, but he sounds like he wanted it to work out better than it has. I'd like to think that means he was also prepared to be emotionally supportive, and attentive to his wife.

Diogenes of Apollonia often picked up bored housewives at the mall. "You look like you are made more of fire than of earth or air," he would say. "Let's get out of here."

Rather than waste eight drachmas at a motel, Hippias of Peloponnesos would buy a sufficiency of tokens to do his fucking at the car wash.

I damn sure wouldn't cheat. If you're that unhappy, get a divorce.

I think the stories are as true as Penthouse letters.

Trust me, this is not me ... BUT on this narrow point I can see the logic of someone, though not necessarily freq who is a serial freak.

You have a lot built with this one person. There are kids involved, significant wealth and common assets, the difficulty of maintaining two households instead of one on the same amount of money, and nowadays even the idea of spousal health care coverage is a consideration. So a person steps out to see if he/she would be happier not being married, but decides that it's better to stay. I have seen this situation play out, sometimes when the spouse doesn't know and sometimes when the spouse actually does find out, and as many times as not the people stay together and find some level of happiness after the fact.

It wouldn't be for me. But I have seen it work too many times to be such a hard-liner about getting the divorce first.

That's actually a somewhat sane post on this thread. I don't necessarily agree or think it's that simple, but at least there's sanity.

Well, it's like anything else. The end product presented to someone can seem darn appealing. But as we in journalism especially know, people would by and large blanch at how the sausage got made, as it were. At least at first glance. They'd see the mundane-ness, or the exigencies and the shortcuts, it takes, and it would de-romanticize the process.

One could also then step back and have a little, teeny awe at how anything got made at all. And, whether fact or fiction, that aspect is fascinating. And, it's entertaining when not pondered to the nth.

YF: You ever read/listen to Dan Savage? (I guess you could include "watch" now, as well.) He's got a lot of ideas similar to what you're saying.

Of course in Europe (or so the stereotype goes), all this angst would have people snickering. Not at the stuff in your post, necessarily; I mean those who would monsterize freqposter
