I see his column once in a while when I pick up the free weekly.

Now, some of the people that write to him? I'm not sure I believe their situations?

Just another reason to leave school early, go play ball in Europe, and soak up some of their values.

You know, some of them do strike me as Penthouse Letters: The New Class.

By the way, if it wasn't clear, I was referring to your commodity trader/"keep them happy" post. I just didn't want to quote a massive post while only adding a one-line response.

Yeah, even in more old-timey America, for all the puritanical pooh-poohing, I figure this is the kind of thing that just wasn't spoken about so it couldn't be a barometer of a good marriage.

I am not sure how the studies are done, if it's B.S. self-reporting or what, but when you see that even in America half of married men and a quarter of married women cheat, it's more food for thought that the hard-liners are the ones who are far off.

I mean, do we really think Petrino's wife was shocked that this could be happening? I'm sure she'll divorce him but mostly because he embarrassed her publicly.

    I knew what you meant.

I guess I haven't picked that up as a theme in his advice, but I don't really read him enough.

I guess for the most part, these marriages involving famous men or famous women take place before the person becomes famous, so the calculus of "he/she will have so much opportunity and temptation as a famous person. Can I keep my mate from straying? And should I just not even ponder that he/she realistically could be?" doesn't come into play. Of course, it's a calculus the next wife of, say, Arnold Schwarzenegger darn well better figure out.

Maybe some of the Catholics on the board can help clarify this. I've had a couple Catholic buddies who before they got married were required to a counselling weekend retreat type thing.

Their future wives said that they were basically told that they have to "service" the men's needs as this would lead to a happier married existence.

I don't know if it is BS and the last place I would look for any kind of moral guidance is the Catholic church but it does seem to reinforce what Freq and YK are saying about fullfilling the marital requirements.

We may not always agree, but you're one of my favorite posters more often than you know. ;D

Here's an article from last year in the NYT that deals with Savage and his thoughts about monogamy: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/03/magazine/infidelity-will-keep-us-together.html?pagewanted=all.

It's definitely an interesting piece. I'm assuming he'd still say freq is an ass.

I shudder to think of some of the places you'd look to before the Catholic church if the Catholic church is the last place you'd look.
