Hate to give credit to ESPN, but its ranking was much better, IMO.

I sub in the 1984 49ers for the Steelers, but only by a hair.

1989 is my vote for best ever, by a sliver over the Bears.

Pardon, the baby crying dubbed into the video, but this is his exact quote:

Truth or not, you don't throw your teammates under the bus like that.

Fanboy alert (though I'm not wrong here)

First of all, the extremely mediocre '84 Steelers beat the '84 49ers...in San Francisco (check it out. That really was the 49ers only defeat that year).

More to the point, nine of the 22 starters on the '78 Steelers went to the Hall of Fame. They had the No. 1 defense in football in points allowed and the NFL's MVP at quarterback.

And unlike the Dolphins' team that the 49ers beat for the championship in '84, the '78 Steelers had to beat a team with a defense in the Super Bowl. The Cowboys were damn good that year.

I can see adding the '84 49ers to the list that should be ahead of the '72 Dolphins, but not as a replacement for the '78 Steelers.

    His teammates are men.

Peyton said nothing that day that they didn't already painfully realize themselves.

In fact, the OL said their performance that game was the inspiration for this season.

"I think experiences like that help you get to this point. It teaches you the sense of urgency you have to have to win a championship." -- left tackle Tarek Glenn.

"We took that as a challenge this season . . . to be the best line we've ever been." --- center Jeff Saturday

Obviously a fire was lit under them.

    GOOD.

And can we please retire the "throwing them under the bus" phrase for something more serious than an innocuous answer at a news conference?

    Sure you can.
One plays in a Circus Tent in Indianapolis, one plays outdoors in Green Bay, Wisc.

That's more than I would say about Manning.

    Fine.

Then go sniff Terrell Owens' jock. Or Chad Johnson's jock. Or Ray Lewis' jock. Or Tank Johnson's jock.

Or some other person who fits your description of a man.

And the Cowboys easily could have won that Super Bowl.

Nice counterpoint, though. It's true that the 49ers played better on the road than at home that year.

However, the Steelers, mediocrity aside in 1984, still won the division and played in the AFC Championship Game.

The 1978 Steelers, along with almost being beaten in XIII, beat the 4-12 Bengals by a point and the 4-12 Chiefs by 3, both at Three Rivers. They also slipped by the 8-8 Browns at Three Rivers by six.

And, though their losses were each to Final Four teams, they did lose twice as many games as the '84 Niners.

    The Super Bowl opposition?

The 1984 Dolphins outscored their 18 pre-Super Bowl opponents by average of 14.06 points per game, while the 1978 Cowboys cleared the opposition by 11.72.

And the 49ers euthanized the Dolphins. No Jackie Smith.

It's close, but I go with the 1984 Niners there.

Well I would sniff Manning's jock, but you seem to be wiping your chin off with it.

I don't understand you guys. You bitch and moan about how all athletes are fakes and give shitty quotes that are all the same and nothing but cliches. You get one that speaks the truth, and you say he throws his teammates under the bus.

Dude, I love ya, but it's bullshit. There's nothing wrong with a guy calling out his teammates when they fuck up. If they don't like, they need to play better. Pure and simple.
