    "Stephen's Horse Is Hungry."

"I hear they've interviewed some Caucasians, and Mike Fratello, who is Italian ... "

(Wish I could remember the exact wording of that line, because it still cracks me up to this day.)

Just so you know, I doubt you, SAS or the Inquirer want notoriety ... Not to nitpick on your grammar, but it's a common mistake. Notoriety, or being notorious, is not such a great thing! Al Capone was notorious. Michael Vick is now notorious.
I just thought I would let you know.

And as a passing comment, the phrase "last hired, first fired" is universal, and expresses no preference as to race or gender.
    [/quote]

It is not universal in our industry when women and minorities are in most cases the last to be hired because of little movement in our industry..

This is 1000 percent correct! This is the best summation of the entire subject!

Look, I stated my opinion and we all don't have to agree on the same issue. I think the Inquirer had a bullshit excuse to strip SAS column. "Playing second fiddle to ESPN" was just a poor excuse to justify their decision. But then again, the higher-ups don't have a pulse when it relates to layoffs or moving someone down to a GA position. Let's just face reality, Smith is a loud, in your face, opinionated black man. And how can anyone dismiss the fact that race played a part in this issue? Yes its 2007, but racism is still running rampant in society and it can rear its ugly head in journalism.

P.S. Here is a great column by Jemelle Hill on the Mike Vick fiasco. She is definitely one of the best.

If y'all wanna make this a race issue, when none of us have reason to believe it is, here's a suggestion for SAS' replacement:

    Jason Whitlock.

Think his style would go over big, no pun intended, in Philly.

I doubt the Inquirer's owners are willing to open the wallet. Heck, if they were, they might wanna bring Billy Lyon back, too, because he's very, very sorely missed.

That paper is not even half of what it was three years ago.

Face this reality: Failure to do your job adequately, regardless of your race, is a legitimate reason for dismissal. Can any minority in this country get canned just for not doing their job anymore? Besides, if the paper is really trying to keep an opinionated black man down, then it would've never given him the chance to get up to the celebrity status he has in the first place.
