There is no way he's going to take a step down, not even if it means more money. What if it were one of us. How many of us would be willing to take what's generally considered a step down -- from any job -- and continue to work with there.

This is just a way around a firing or a buyout to save face for the Inquirer. If Smith quits, the paper doesn't look badly at all, at least to its readers.

The paper doesn't have a good record with minority journalists. This doesn't help the cause.

They did at least bring back Aldridge. I can't remember if he's a columnist there now (I think he may be), but if he's not, he should be bumped up. And he's one guy who I wouldn't worry about selling his newspaper columns down the river.

Which is what made Stephen A. expendable. DA is a better journalist, period. And DA's time at the Inky might not be much longer as he is very marketable in other venues.

We had this debate about the time of the layoffs last year, and I thought they should've cut Stephen A loose then.

Aldridge is a precious talent in that he can do TV and print equally well. Papers need to make a place for people like him, and I hope the Inky is able to hold onto him.

Used to be a newspaper gig used to give a guy THE cred in order to appear on TV. Now the newspaper is treated like child support paid to the product of a one night stand.

I'm waiting for the day when ESPN places one of their talking heads at each of their ESPNZone restaurants. For 10 bucks you get five minutes yakking about the topic du jour with SAS, MW, TK, Doug Gottlieb, et. all caught on a DVD for home viewing.

Mizzou's embellishment juices are running at high tide. $500,000 for Paige? Singleton's not stupid. $500,000 for Kornheiser? Maybe the moribund Post Radio paid half that for his off-season yodeling; he is a national network star. But for the paper and the website, Tony might work for free. He used to take 50K when he decided to talk incessantly and type intermittently. Now that he doesn't type at all, and only does that insipid "Talking Points" for the website, it'd be no surprise if he told the Post to give his 50K to that Post charity deal for college scholarships that he and Wilbon front. That's how much he appreciates what the place has done for him.

Trust me, K is getting more than $50k from WaPo.

He's not getting anywhere close to 500 large, which just about anyone at the Post will tell you (including Wilbon), but it's more fun to throw a number out there just to see if it sticks.

One thing about Canzano: I've seen no evidence of him shortchanging his column since he's been on the radio. Whether you agree with his decision to do a show on Allen's radio station or not, the guy works his ass off. His column hasn't suffered.

    Absolutely.

The Inky's flipped the big bird at Screamin' A.

Unless he thinks he can do some obscure good by lawyering up, he's outta there.
